Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 28th January

This week in Literacy we will be finishing our poetry unit by looking at different types of poems. We will explore shape poems and have a go at creating our own in the shape of a plant, then finish by looking at acrostic poems (where the first letter of each line spells out a vertical word).

By the end of the week children will be able to :

  • Plan their ideas.
  • Write a sequence of these ideas, then check their work.
  • Use two adjectives separated with the word “and”

This week in maths we will be moving onto measurement. The focus is measuring length using both non-standard (cubes) and standard (centimeters) units.

Please watch this video to support your child’s understanding of measurement:

This week in Topic children will begin work on their Design Technology project to produce a clay tile with a flower or plant design.

Children will:

  • Use a viewfinder to see details of plants.
  • Draw several design sketches showing the details of the plant they like.
  • Select a final design to make into a clay tile next week.

Children will also perform a simple scientific test using food colouring and water to observe how a plant absorbs water.

Week Commencing 28th January

This week we will be finishing off our dinosaur topic. Each class will be following the children’s interests to further their learning about dinosaurs.

In addition, in the lead up to our ‘Dinosaurs Do Dirt’ day, we will be focusing on volcanoes, fossils and and the job of a paleontologist.

This term is all about building your children’s knowledge of rhyming which is a critical pre-reading skill. Before your children start to ‘read’ words using the written letter symbols, we need them to be able to hear the sounds in each word and the patterns that we make. We are busy working on nonsense rhymes this week. We can mix up real and non-real words, as long as they rhyme as follows: week, deek, ceek, seek, jeek. We just needs lots and lots of practise!

You can also have a go at making up some nonsense rhymes together. It’s a lot of fun 🙂

There are some good examples in the video below;

In maths we are describing things we see using words such as round, tall, straight, long, curved and zig zag. We can use all of these to describe dinosaurs! Some of them have long, straight necks, some of them have zig zag teeth, and some of them have long curvy tails. I wonder what words you can use to describe some of the dinosaurs?

In Arabic we will be learning:

  • Topic: Jungle animals (giraffe)
  • Read and colour the letter zay (ز).
  • Pronounce at least 3 words that contain the letter
  • Concept: (Light, heavy)

Story:قصة (الزرافة زوزو)

Thursday 1st February: Dinosaurs Do Dirt Day. We will be celebrating the end of our topic by having a messy day. There will be exploding volcanoes, digging for dinosaur fossils and much more! Please could your child come dressed in some clothes that you don’t mind getting messy (and possibly throwing away when they get home) and send a change of clothes.

Monday 5th February – N3 & N5: Tasneem Agriculture Trip

Tuesday 6th February – N4 & N7: Tasneem Agriculture Trip

Wednesday 7th February – N1, N2 & N6: Tasneem Agriculture Trip

dsc_4787.jpg Year 1 Garden Centre Trip

To give our Year 1 children a hands-on experience related to their topic ‘Plants’, they were taken on a walk to a nearby plant centre, called ‘Lotus Garden’. The children were put to work to help weed, plant and water flowers. They had the opportunity to sniff, touch and look at all the beautiful plants and flowers. Gardeners took great care in explaining to the children what the various plants and flowers were.

A big thank you to all the staff there that made us feel so welcome.

Year 2 Farm Trip

Not to be outdone, the Year 2 children had the fantastic opportunity of visiting the farm at Remsoon Gardens. The farm, famous for its wide variety of home-grown vegetables and flowers, as well as it small holding of animals such as peacocks and goats, is a regular destination for our Year 2 students and always receives the same enjoyment and fascination as the students see where the vegetables they see in the supermarket are really grown. Our children had a great time, and judging by the armfuls of vegetables they brought back with them, they learned a lot about how food grows. Many thanks, as always, to Reem for allowing our students to experience this opportunity.

Here are some photos from the day.

Congratulations to all our ‘Super Stars’ this week!

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 28th January

Year 2 Choir (after school club)

We still have a few spaces available for pupils in Year 2 who are interested in joining the choir. We meet every Thursday from 2.20 – 3.20 in the music room. To sign up, please visit the Infant Office or email Lori –

Recycling project

After half term the children will carry out a recycling project. They will need some recycled materials from home. We would love it if you could start collecting milk bottle tops, kitchen roll inners, cereal boxes, other smaller tubs and lids, to bring in after the half term break. Please make sure all bottles and tubs have been washed!

It is time for us to use our imaginations and invent our own version of the Little Red Riding Hood story. We will consider different animals, different characters and even different settings to see how each would affect the story.

By the end of the week the children will have written a new beginning, a new middle and a new ending to their story.

Discuss with your child the changes they have decided to make as the week continues.

We move on to cover shape this week. The children have already been introduced to 2D shapes and some 3D shapes in Y1, usually the most common and regular shapes. This time they will learn all the vocabulary related to the shapes and the must learn to identify the 2D shapes they can see within 3D items and objects. For example, the cuboid dining table has rectangular faces while the telescope has a circular face. We will also explore shape symmetry.

Practise the vocabulary at home: sides, edges, faces, vertices

We are very excited to have a second farm trip this week. All classes will take the bus to Peninsula Farm one day this week. It is our intention to compare the two farms when we return to class. We will be considering these 5 questions:

  • How do they plant their seeds?
  • How do they water their crops?
  • How does the light get to the plants?
  • How do they check the temperature is right?
  • Do they use soil for their plants?

Can the children remember the 4 methods of seed dispersal we learned from last week? What does seed explosion mean?
