Nursery

Week Commencing 25th February

topicliteracy

This week we are all about Book Week in Nursery so Topic and Literacy are quite literally hand in hand. All teachers have shared with their class information for children to bring their own book into school to share with their friends. Please check with your class teacher if you are not sure.

Parents have also been invited to come in and read to us if they have some spare time. Please just let your class teacher know so they can organise the time with you. There is something very special about having our mums and dads come into class and read so we would love to make time for you all 🙂

If you come into school with your children you will also see that all the classroom doors in the Infants School have been decorated. Each door represents a different book. If you have the time it would be lovely if you could walk round and talk about the different doors with your child.

In 2016 there was a simultaneous storytelling video made of a lovely book called ‘I Got This Hat.’ It’s a great story as a hat can let us be all kinds of different people… which make them a great story starter for our own tales. Take a look at the video below:

maths

Maths activities will be incorporated into our readings of different books as appropriate. There will doubtless be lots of counting, shape naiming, and describing of positions such as behind, on, under, etc. 🙂

Book Week will start on Sunday 25th February after Half Term.We will have lots of fun activities planned including asking the children to bring in their favourite story to read aloud to their friends. In addition, a year 6 class will join us one day to read some books together. We will also be asking for parent volunteers to come and read with their child’s class during the week.

On Thursday 1st of March the whole school will have Book Character Day. Your child should come to school dressed up as their favourite book character and bring the book too for sharing if possible. The best costumes are always the homemade ones that the children have made with you. They have that special personal touch 🙂

11th March – 22nd March: We will be holding our Parent Teacher Meetings at the end of each day during these 2 weeks. A little nearer to the time we will open up the booking system so that you can select your preferred available slots.

On Thursday 22nd March it is Arabic Mothers Day and we will be inviting all our mums into our classes at the end of the day. We are giving you lots of notice as we would love it if all mums can come. We will be inviting you to join us from 11:30 and you will be doing a little activity with your child to celebrate your special day 🙂

Week Commencing 25th February

literacy

This week we will be learning the short oo sound as in book and wood.  Please see the videos below from Geraldine Giraffe and Mr Thorne to find out more:

If the children would like to each bring a small oo object (labelled with their name if they want it back) the teachers would love to see them.

Blending practice is available at the Dinosaur Egg Game at http://www.ictgames.com/dinosaurEggs_phonics/ on level 11 which focuses on the oo digraph.

The tricky word we will be learning is come.

maths

In Maths we will be learning more about common 3D shapes.  This includes: spheres, cubes, cuboids, cones, cylinders, pyramids …

One way of helping children to really understand 3D shapes, and their similarities and differences is to go for a shape hunt around their home or the local area.

topic

Our topic focus this week is books.  We will be finding out about caring for books, different types of books, the parts of a book, why pages are numbered … as well as sharing books and making lots of books of our own.

Buddy Reading

This week each child can bring in their favourite book to retell the story to their friends during Book Week (Please make sure it is clearly labelled with their name & class).

Book Character Day and Parade

On Thursday 1st March we are having a book character day and parade in which we ask all children (and staff) in Reception to come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Parents are invited to watch the parade in the Key Stage 1 playground at 8.15am.  After the parade the children will return to their classes to continue with the school day.

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 25th February

bookweekbanner

Next week, 25th Feb-1st March is Book Week in the Infants. As part of book week, we will be focusing on stories by Roald Dahl. We would like to recommend two home learning activities for you to complete with your children over the half term break.
  • Have a go at producing a short piece of Roald Dahl research (Click here for template).
  • Take a picture of your child reading a book in a fun and unusual place e.g. On a horse, on a trampoline…etc. The more unusual the better but remember to stay safe! They can bring this photo to class on Sunday to share.
Secret Readers
During the week we would love for some parents to volunteer to be our ‘secret readers’. This means you organise a time with your class teacher, then surprise the class (including your child!) by reading them a story.
Jam Jars
As part of the weeks Literacy activities, the children will require a jar (roughly jam jar sized is suitable). Please could this be sent to school on Sunday 25th? If possible, we would prefer for these not to be made of glass and with the label peeled off.
Character Day
Finally, just a reminder that the Thursday of book week will be our Character dress up day. We would like to encourage all the children to dress up as a character from their favourite book and to bring in their book to show their classmates. There will be a Year 1 parade for parents at 8am in the KS1 playground.
Have a lovely half term break!

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 25th February

Reminders

Y2 Spring Concert

The Year 2 concert will take place on Tuesday 27th March. We ask that parents do not leave early for the Spring break to ensure all children can take part in this important annual event. If your child’s absence is completely unavoidable on this date, please let your class teacher know so that they are aware that your child will not participate in the final show.

Recycling materials

Our recycle project begins this week. We will be creating animals in DT and will use the materials to furnish the wooden structures we create. Please could you bring to school any milk bottle tops, kitchen roll inners, cereal boxes, Pringle boxes, plastic bottles, and other smaller tubs and lids that you have collected for us?

literacy

This week is book week and we look forward to meeting our Y4 buddies and to our parents joining us in class to read stories. In lesson time, the children will revisit the features of an information text and create their own.

Can you remember what a caption is? A label? Do you know any animal WOW Facts?

maths

Our new unit is fractions. We will begin by learning about the whole and what this word means, by the end of the week the children will have explored ½, half of a shape and half of a quantity, they will also begin to think about ¼ and how to create quarters within shapes.

topic

Now that the children have been introduced to a number of countries on Airport Day, each class will focus on one of these only. This way the children learn a lot about one country, rather than a surface amount about a variety of countries. This week the children will locate their country on a map, using an atlas and its index, and they will begin to learn some of the language spoken in that country.

Year 2 – Airport Day

The students hopped on a jet and took to the skies for Year 2’s Airport Day! They began their voyage by boarding onto a make-believe plane, but not before passing through a security check and presenting their tickets to the courteous flight attendants!

The students then patiently waited for Captain Collins and his co-pilot, Mr. Brant to begin the flight as the teachers performed safety demonstrations. After a turbulent take-off, our pilot, Mr. Collins managed to get us safely to our many destinations. The sound of the plane engine echoed through the corridor making the children feel like they were really mid-air and on route to an unknown destination.

The Year 2 classrooms were transformed into different countries, each showcasing various art and photos. The children traveled from one country to the next, accumulating fun facts about each destination.

Thank you to all the staff for their efforts in preparing the day for the children and to all our learners who were once again a credit to our school.

Here are a few photos and a video for you to enjoy…

DSC_4787Reception – Botanical Gardens

The Reception students set out on a mini beast hunt at the Budaiya Botanical Gardens this week. The gardens had plenty of minibeasts to be discovered like snails, spiders, worms, and many more! The curious children used a magnifying glass to get a closer look at each creepy crawly then discussed the patterns, colours, and shapes they observed. They also made sure to gently place each one back safely where they found them.

After an eventful day of minibeast spotting, the children enjoyed a lovely picnic with their classmates.

Reception – Minibeast Concert

Our budding Biologists in Reception have spent the last few weeks searching for minibeasts and conducting ‘laboratory examinations’ in their classrooms. They have amazed their teachers with their enthusiasm for these tiny creatures and with the wealth of information they have discovered.

On Thursday 15th February, the children celebrated their learning with a colourful Minibeast Parade. The audience was treated to a selection of minibeast songs and poems and the children gave their parents a very important message….‘Please don’t squish them’…

I would also like to thank all parents and teachers for creating such an imaginative selection of costumes.

Bahrain Sports Day

In celebration of Bahrain Sports Day, the Infant school hosted an energetic early morning work-out session we like to call ‘Wake up, shake up’! Wake up, shake up is a fun way to get students and teachers moving! The children followed the teachers’ lead as they performed various exercises like jumping jacks and aerobics. It was an exciting way to get the students’ energy levels up and to promote good health and fitness.

Nursery

Week commencing 18th February

During this half term we have been talking about people who help us, where we are in the world, how other people live in the world, and different kinds of houses around the world. It would be lovely to watch this video with your child, My Little Human Planet, which is all about different homes around the world. Things to talk about with your child include what the houses are made from and whether they have the same furniture inside them as they do. It’s also a lovely way to have a chat about things we are thankful for and how we can show we are grateful for all the things we are lucky enough to have.

literacy

Our work on rhyming is continuing and your children are getting lots of practice. One of our favourite rhyming characters is Hairy Maclary and all his friends. See if you can hear the rhyming pairs such as Bottomley Potts covered in spots, and Hercules Morse as big as a horse! Maybe you can find some more rhyming pairs at home 🙂

maths

We are continuing to work on recognition of numerals as well as putting them in the right order. As we have been talking about houses and homes, if you happen to be in a building with an elevator this weekend, why not take a moment with your child to look at the number buttons on the panel inside and look at the order. They start at 1 and go up to? How many floors does the building have? If you have some spare time on your hands you could have a go at this activity from toddlerapproved.com:

Elevator Number Game
