For week commencing Sunday, 11th February
This week the children are going to read and perform lots of poems, hopefully learning some by heart. We will practise changing our voices to suit the poem and to add the best expression. We will also spend time looking for and discussing the quality of the descriptive language used in different poems. The children will have the chance to write a kenning poem about themselves, modelled upon the kenning poems they have read in class.
This week completes our shape unit. Having familiarized themselves with the properties of 3d shapes, the children will explore the nets of these shapes. They will look closely at the nets, predict which 3d shape it makes and build the shape to check. The children will move on to making patterns with 3d shapes before solving puzzles and reasoning problems about shapes at the end of the week.
Practise the vocabulary at home: sides, edges, faces, vertices. How many 3d shapes can you name? Can you find any in your house? Carry out a shape hunt!
The children will be introduced to a range of habitats over the next few weeks. This week it will be the Polar regions. They will learn about the conditions there and the types of animals and plants that might choose to live there.
The children will investigate food chains, working out how the animals stay alive.
What do they eat? E.G. Polar Bear–Seal-Fish-Krill-seaweed
Finally, we will discuss adaptation, how animals are suited to the habitat in which they live. We will ask the children, can a giraffe live in the Arctic? And help them work out why this is not possible.
