Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 18th February

Reminders

Health and Safety matters

We still have a large number of children roaming the playground and corridors alone before 7:45am each morning. For the children’s safety, they must not be left unsupervised. Kindly note that teachers are not responsible for the whereabouts of children before the school day begins as they are busy with their preparations for the day. Parents are welcome to drop the children to the early supervision club in the main sports hall if they are unable to remain with their child.

It has been noticed that some of the children have especially long fingernails. Please can you ensure that the children’s nails are kept short and neat so that children do not cause injury to themselves and to others while playing or taking PE lessons?

Y2 Spring Concert

The Year 2 concert will take place on Tuesday, 27th March. We encourage parents not to leave early for the Spring break to ensure all children can take part in this important annual event. If the absence is completely unavoidable on this date, please let your class teacher know so that they are aware that your child will not participate in the final show.

Recycling materials

Our recycling project begins after the short holiday next week. Please could you bring to school any milk bottle tops, kitchen roll inners, cereal boxes, other smaller tubs and lids that you have collected for us?

literacy

The children will complete and refine their kenning poems this week before filming them so that we can share them with parents. We think you will be very impressed with their poetry writing skills.

maths

During the very short week, we will focus on revision of the units covered in the previous 7 weeks and additionally a big push on mental maths strategies based around the 4 operations (+, -, X, ÷)

topicddd

We have planned a special super-secret topic day this week. The children will have a creative arts day learning more information for their topic. They will end the day thoroughly exhausted but we have no doubt that they will love it!

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 18th February

literacy
This week in Literacy the children will create their our own stories, based on last week’s exploration of ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. Children will use their own ideas for new characters, events and settings to create their own story.

By the end of the week, children will be able to write this story including a beginning, middle and end.

Parent Secret Readers

Our first week back after half term will be book week. One of the many exciting activities we have planned for the children is named ‘Parent Secret Readers’. This is where a relative of the child volunteers to read a story to the whole class. The catch is, that none of the children will know you are coming in to read to them, not even the child who is a relative of the story reader. If you are interested and would like to know more information, please speak to your class rep or class teacher.

maths

Next week in maths we will consolidate the children’s learning about ‘measure‘.

We will recap:

  • What we use/how to measure length, height and weight,
  • What things we measure the length, height and weight of
  • The different units we measure in.

topic

In Topic we will be continuing our study of our class artist. This will include:

  • Learning about their life.
  • Looking at the different techniques they use.
  • Recreating one of their landscapes.
  • Creating our own Bahrain landscape in their style.

Next Tuesday’s ‘Fabulous Finish’

Next Tuesday, 20th February, will see the year group conclude it’s topic all about ‘Plants’. Throughout this topic, the children have used plants and flowers as a stimulus to create many different compositions, drawings and paintings.

We invite you into your child’s class on this day at 11am to share a juice and biscuit with your child as they proudly show and tell you all about their creations. You will then be able to take your child home as this day is an early finish.

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 11th February

literacy

Next week in Literacy the children will continue to learn about stories with familiar settings, moving onto the story of ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. They will also learn how to use a thesaurus to find new and adventurous adjectives and start to use them in their own writing.

By the end of the week children will be able to:

  • Select and use adventurous adjectives
  • Write a familiar story with a beginning, middle and end

maths

For Maths this week the children will measure and compare the mass of objects. They will use non-standard and standard measurements, introducing Grams and Kilograms, using weighing scales and balancing scales.

Why not try measuring some things at home? You could choose some items and discuss which is heavier and which is lighter? If you are baking or cooking look at the measurements and discuss how much you need.

topic

For Topic this week we will be continuing our Science and Geography work, thinking about how fruits and vegetables grow and what countries they come from.

Have a look at what fruits and vegetables you can find at home. Discuss with your children how they grow (for example is it from a tree or a root vegetable) and what country they grow in.

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 11th February

literacy

This week the children are going to read and perform lots of poems, hopefully learning some by heart. We will practise changing our voices to suit the poem and to add the best expression. We will also spend time looking for and discussing the quality of the descriptive language used in different poems. The children will have the chance to write a kenning poem about themselves, modelled upon the kenning poems they have read in class.

maths

This week completes our shape unit. Having familiarized themselves with the properties of 3d shapes, the children will explore the nets of these shapes. They will look closely at the nets, predict which 3d shape it makes and build the shape to check. The children will move on to making patterns with 3d shapes before solving puzzles and reasoning problems about shapes at the end of the week.

Practise the vocabulary at home: sides, edges, faces, vertices. How many 3d shapes can you name? Can you find any in your house? Carry out a shape hunt!

topic

The children will be introduced to a range of habitats over the next few weeks. This week it will be the Polar regions. They will learn about the conditions there and the types of animals and plants that might choose to live there.

The children will investigate food chains, working out how the animals stay alive.
What do they eat? E.G. Polar Bear–Seal-Fish-Krill-seaweed

Finally, we will discuss adaptation, how animals are suited to the habitat in which they live. We will ask the children, can a giraffe live in the Arctic? And help them work out why this is not possible.

dsc_4787.jpgYear 1 – Trip to a Local Supermarket

This week the children in Year 1 were lucky enough to go to the supermarket Alosra where they learnt about local foods and produce. The children found out about the many different types of meat, fish and dairy products that are produced in Bahrain.  Ipads were used by the children to photograph the local produce and film the Alosra employees who spoke to the children about their many different local products.

E-Safety Day

It is an undeniable fact that children nowadays are doing more on the internet than ever before and it can be a very fun and helpful tool for them. However, just as in ‘real life’, it is necessary to be wary of potential risks and dangers when online.

At BSB Infant School, we view ICT and the internet as a valuable learning resource and teach all our pupils to use it responsibly and safely. This week, children have learnt all about the importance of e-safety as part of “E-Safety Day”. Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally in February each year to promote the safe and positive use of digital technology for children.

One valuable way of ensuring all our children understand the importance of e-safety issues is by means of e-safety assemblies. Ms. Rasha, our computing teacher, led a very informative assembly this week focusing on the importance of using the internet carefully and making sure everyone understands what to do if they notice anything unusual or upsetting. We want our students to know that they can have fun online whilst remaining safe!

Think before you click

Special Treat from the Music Academy

The KS1 students had an extra special assembly this week!

The students were given a spectacular piano and violin performance by instructors from the BSB Music Academies. The children truly enjoyed listening to the performances and many showed a strong interest in learning how to play. Exploring the world of music is extremely beneficial for children. Our after-school academies offer lessons for a variety of different instruments including viola, violin, piano, guitar, cello, and drums and they even offer singing lessons. If your child would like to take up an instrument but they are not sure which one suits them, then we recommend they sign up for the Explore Instruments class which is held every Tuesday from 2:30-3pm.

If you’d like to find out more information regarding academy registration please see our academies reception desk located on the ground floor in the administration building or email academies@thebsbh.com.

Congratulations to all our ‘Super Stars’ this week!

Reception

Week commencing 11th February

literacy

This week we will be learning the igh sound as in high, night and right.  Our friend Geraldine the Giraffe is helping out as usual:

along with Mr Thorne:

If the children would like to each bring a small igh object (labelled with their name if they want it back) the teachers would love to see them. It could be a picture of a night sky or an arrow pointing right. We’re sure you will have some great ideas 🙂

Our new tricky word this week is ‘some‘. We will be making some sentences together using the word ‘some‘. We will also be playing the ‘Supermarket’ game, using the sentence, “I went to the market and I bought some … ”

We will keep adding to the sentence and we will all have to try and remember all the things we have bought in the right order. E.g. I went to the market and I bought some apples, oranges, bananas, bread, butter, jam and fish. I wonder how many words you will be able to remember?

maths

In Maths we will be learning about money.  In particular we will be talking about what we use money for and where we use it, as well as how much different things might cost. It would be lovely if you are out doing your weekly shopping and you talked about the prices with your child. Point out the labels you can see as you go round the supermarket and see if you can work out together how much each item is.

topic

We are having our class trips to the Botanical Gardens this week as we put on our detective hats and try to find as many mini-beasts as we can as we explore the different areas in the gardens.

This week we also have our Mini-beast Parade to which all our parents are invited (see the dates for your diary below). It is the culmination of lots of work that has taken place over the past half term learning about lots of different bugs and creepy crawlies that share our world with us.

save the date

Botanical Garden Trip  The Reception classes will visit the Botanical Gardens in Budaiya for a fun mini-beast related trip as follows:

Sunday 11th February R1, R2, R3, R4 & R5

Monday 12th February R6, R7, R8 & R9.

The children will need to wear their PE kit (and a coat depending on the weather). We will be having a picnic lunch so this should be packed in disposable containers in a plastic or paper bag, clearly marked with the child’s name and class. This is also one of the few occasions when we would like the children to bring a single use drinks containers.

Mini-beast Parade

The children will need to dress up as a mini-beast for our mini-beast day on February 15th.  The day will include a parade for the parents with some mini-beast action songs at 8.30am and then a carousel of fun activities for the children, to round off their learning linked to mini-beasts.

Book Bags  The children have been reminded that their book bags should only have books, work & letters in them as the books need to be looked after. Hats, spare clothes, water bottles, lunch boxes etc. should never be put in the Book Bags.
