Feriha 2International Day

Once again, we enjoyed another successful International Day on Wednesday 28th March celebrating the cultural diversity of our school.  All our pupils and staff looked wonderful as they came to school dressed in the traditional clothes of their country of origin. The event kicked off with a parade where children displayed their traditional costumes to their peers and also enjoyed a variety of songs from different countries.

Here are some fantastic photos from our International Day.

Year 1 and Year 2 Concerts

This week saw two fabulous performances of our Year 1 and Year 2 children. Two audiences were treated to a talent- fest of singing, dancing and acting  by our performers. As always we were thrilled at how well the children performed and we are so proud of them all. The concerts really came together over a short space of time and the effort and enthusiasm from everyone made sure it was a success.

Well done to all of the children for their fantastic performances, and thank you all of the teachers and teaching assistants who helped bring these wonderful shows to the BSB stage.

Holiday Wishes

Dear Parents,

The school year continues apace and we are now two terms through. What an incredibly busy but hugely successful and rewarding two terms we have had so far and with lots more of exciting times still to come in the summer term ahead!

On behalf of the Infant School family, I wish all the parents and our children a wonderful and very well deserved break.

Remember that our new term begins on Sunday, 8th April 2018 and we look forward to seeing all of our children return refreshed and eager to learn in the summer term.

With my very best wishes,

Feriha Gauntlett

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 8th April

literacy

This week the children will write a recount of their spring break. They will chronologically describe some of the activities they did or the places they visited. For this purpose we ask each child to bring to school 4 photographs of themselves during the break…in the mall, at the cinema, out for lunch, with their friends, swimming, on an aeroplane…

When writing recounts we will ask the children to think about the emotive language, feelings words that they know. Which are appropriate to describe their holiday, can we find some new words?

maths

Our next unit is position and direction. The children will learn about turn, eg half turns, quarter turns…which can be related to what they know about fractions also. We will also revise left and right and clockwise and anticlockwise. The children will work mostly practically, challenging each other to follow precise directions and ensuring they can give accurate directions. We will also use the Beebots to help us practise.

topic

This week is ‘Being Healthy’ week. In Year 2 this means a focus on hygiene and germs. WE will do some experiments to investigate how germs spread and then discuss way to prevent this from happening.

On Thursday, which is a half day finish for children, we will have a wow starter for our new learning topic. The teachers have a surprise in store for the children.

reminders

SWIMMING

Immediately after the break, swimming lessons will begin for some Year 2 classes, a timetable has been shared with parents to explain. Swimming is part of the curriculum and it is expected that all children will swim. A doctor’s note must be provided if your child is unable to join their session. They MUST wear a swim cap in the pool and must be able to dress and undress themselves quickly to be ready for their slot.

This might also be a good time to ensure that all your child’s uniform items are labelled, items can be easily misplaced during changing and are hard to find if they have not been named.

Reception Bulletin w/c 8th April

Reception

Week Commencing 8th April

This week we will be learning the ow sound as in now, cow and down.  See the videos below from Geraldine the Giraffe and Mr Thorne to see what you can do at home 🙂

If the children would like to each bring a small or object (labelled with their name if they want it back) or a story about a cow or something going down or any other ‘ow’ thing, the teachers would love to see them.

The tricky word we will be learning is when, as in, “When I was on holiday I went to Legoland.”

maths

In maths we will be looking at the concept of halving. Maybe in the holiday you can make some small pizzas together and share them by cutting them in half with a friend 🙂

topic

We will be looking at letters and how we can write a letter to stay in touch with friends and family. If you are going on holiday, maybe you could send a postcard together to your family or even your class teacher!

reminders

Swimming Lessons will begin immediately after the Spring holidays. The children enjoy the experience even more if they feel confident about changing into, and out of, their swimming costumes.  Therefore please can we ask that you take the opportunity to help your child to practise taking off and putting on their own clothes over the coming weeks. If your child is already super independent about dressing perhaps they could practise rolling their own swimming towel. Rest assured though, that the teachers will be there to help with any tricky bits, and to encourage independence.

Have a lovely holiday and see you back in school on Sunday 8th April.

For week commencing Sunday, 8th April

literacy

In Literacy this week we will be writing a report about extreme weather. Children need to research some different types of weather they are interested in and bring their learning in to school after the Spring break.  Please make sure their information is in child friendly language that they understand and can discuss with their class mates.

A great place to start their research is EdPuzzle so remember to log on!

maths

When we return from holiday we will be learning about multiplication and division. We will learn to count in steps of 2, 5 and 10. We will be learning about repeated addition as a method of multiplication.

You can have a go at the times tables during the holidays using these fun videos.

topic

This week will see the beginning of our new Topic learning about different materials and building structures.

Children will be exploring the properties of materials, starting with a Pyjama Camping Day on Monday 9th April. The children will explore a variety of different materials, and whether they are comfortable or suitable for sleeping. This will tie in with Healthy Living Week, where our focus is sleep, and the importance of rest to our bodies.

Children need to come to school on this day wearing their pyjamas (but still bring / wear suitable outdoor footwear for playtime), and one item such as a soft toy / comforter.

There is some optional home learning for the children to do over the holidays to enable them to start thinking about where / how they sleep, and their bedtime routines.

Week Commencing 8th April

topic

After the holiday we are starting our new topic, ‘Under the Sea.’ We will be learning about the ocean, what lives in it, exploring the beach and talking about how to be safe around water. We will also be starting our swimming lessons the first week back so please make sure you get all your swimming costumes organised, including swimming caps and goggles.

A song that the children always enjoy as part of this topic is, ‘There’s a Hole at the Bottom of the Sea.’ You can share it together at home below:

literacy

We will continue to develop our rhyming skills during Term 3 and we will start to work on our oral blending skills as well. This will help us to be fully prepared to start our ‘reading journey’ when your children join Reception next year 🙂

maths

In maths we will be sorting and classifying objects as we explore the concepts of sinking and floating, We will identify objects that sink and float and sort them accordingly. We will then be sharing our thoughts about why we think some things sink and why some float and if there are ways to check our ideas.

We will, of course, continue with all the other basic math skills such as counting, number recognition, and matching a quantity to a numeral along with identifying and using shapes and measure.

reminders

Swimming

Swimming will be starting the week commencing 8th April. The children will need: a swimming costume, towel, swimming hat and goggles and they will need to have their underwear in their bag ready for when they get changed after swimming. Please also make sure that all clothes are labelled to avoid losing anything.

Children should come to school dressed in their swimming costume underneath their PE uniform.

Please continue to practise dressing and undressing at home so the children are able to do this independently.

Trip to the Theatre

The Very Hungry Caterpillar trip is on Monday 16th April. All the children should be at school by 7:45 and the classroom door will be open from 7:30 for that day. This is so we can get onto the bus and depart from school by 8am.

The rest of the week will be spent revising some of the things we have learned in Maths and Literacy this term.

The week will end with a short day on Wednesday, 11:30am finish for Infants, when we will celebrate International day.

As well as some interesting International lessons, the children will discover some of their friend’s favourite traditional dishes from their home countries during our snack time feast.

By the end of the week the children will certainly deserve their Spring break.
