8a0c9fd79768c9160cbee5f642a7e746On Wednesday, 21st March the Arab world celebrated one of the most important people in our life, our mums! Mother’s Day is a very special day to show our love and devotion to our mums and to also thank them for all the wonderful things they do for us.

To show their sincere appreciation for their mums, our Nursery children invited their parents to join them in the classrooms in order to craft Mother’s Day cards together. The pride and delight that the children showed towards their mums was tangible, and you see that their mums hold a special place in their hearts.

Our Arabic Department also led a heartwarming assembly for all the children in the Infant School. The assembly culminated with an iconic Arabic song dedicated to mothers, which was sung joyfully by all the children in the assembly.

Thank you mums, and grandmums for all that you do for your children.

Are you aware of the ‘morning drop-off’ area by the school canteen?

Thank you to parents who have started using the drop off zone to allow the traffic to flow each morning.  Please be advised that ‘parent’s car stickers’ are available at the main security gate and at the receptions for Infants, Juniors and Seniors.

I would like to thank all our teachers and teaching assistants for their goodwill and generosity of spirit in agreeing to accompany the children from the drop-off zone to their classrooms in the morning.

Reception

Week Commencing 25th March

literacy

This week we will be learning the er sound as in her, herb and after.  See the videos below from Geraldine the Giraffe and Mr Thorne to see what you can do at home 🙂

If the children would like to each bring a small or object (labelled with their name if they want it back) or a story about a horn or a sword or any other or thing, the teachers would love to see them.

The teachers would be really pleased if each child could bring in a small amount of a dried herb – you can guess what we will be using them for.

There is a short game which helps the children to distinguish between er, ir and ur at http://www.softschools.com/language_arts/phonics/games/er_ir_and_ur_sounds.jsp

The tricky word we will be learning is one, as in, “One Man Went To Mowwhich can be seen at:

maths

In Maths we will be learning to take away or subtract. If you have some play dough and would like to support learning about subtraction at home playing Subtraction Smash can be great fun.  Instructions can be found at: http://www.recipeforteaching.com/2016/04/subtraction-smash.html

topic

Our topic focus this half-term is Up In The Air. This week we will be learning about one more invention which travel through the air … planes. If you would like to try there are some instructions for making a paper aeroplane at:

This week the students will study :

Arabic Mothers Day Song

If you would like to see a video of the Reception children singing a song for all mothers on Mothers Day the video is being uploaded onto the BSB Facebook Account.

International Day Don’t forget we will be wearing home country National Dress on Wednesday 28th February.

Swimming Lessons will begin immediately after the Spring holidays. The children enjoy the experience even more if they feel confident about changing into, and out of, their swimming costumes.  Therefore please can we ask that you take the opportunity to help your child to practise taking off and putting on their own clothes over the coming weeks. If your child is already super independent about dressing perhaps they could practise rolling their own swimming towel. Rest assured though, that the teachers will be there to help with any tricky bits, and to encourage independence.

topic

We will be finishing our current topic, ‘Once Upon a Time’ this week as we finish Term 2. There will be lots of storytelling happening with children sharing their favourite stories that we have been learning: The 3 Little Pigs; The 3 Billy Goats Gruff; and The Enormous Turnip 🙂 Hopefully they are sharing these with you at home as well!

literacy

We will continue to practise rhyming words in class as part of our regular routine. Sometimes we tell stories that rhyme, sometimes we make up our own nonsense rhymes and sometimes we make a string of words that all rhyme by adding one at a time e.g. dog, frog, log, jog, cog, sog, mog. You can have a go at home with this simple rhyming game  🙂 http://pbskids.org/sesame/games/grovers-rhyme-time

reminders

International Day

International day will be held on Wednesday 28th March, the last day of this term.  Children should come to school dressed in either the traditional dress of a chosen country, or in clothes that match the colours from their home country flag.

It is a lovely day where we celebrate all the nationalities from the class. Please discuss with your child things about their Nationality that they can talk about during circle time.

We would also like all the children to bring a traditional plate of food from their home country which will be shared with everyone during snack time. Your class link will be helping to organise this with the class teacher 🙂 Individual snack boxes will not be needed as children will be sharing the food that each child provides for the class.

Swimming

Swimming will be starting the week commencing 8th April. The children will need: a swimming costume, towel, swimming hat and goggles and they will need to have their underwear in their bag ready for when they get changed after swimming. Please also make sure that all clothes are labelled to avoid losing anything.

Children should come to school dressed in their swimming costume underneath their PE uniform.

Please continue to practise dressing and undressing at home so the children are able to do this independently.

Trip to the Theatre

The Very Hungry Caterpillar trip is on Monday 16th April. All the children should be at school by 7:45 at the very latest. Classroom doors will open from 07:30 as they have been recently to enable early drop off.

The buses need to leave school at 8am so that we can get to the show on time.

We are continuing our work on stories until the end of term. The Enormous Turnip is another story that we are covering and one that you might like to read at home. It is a lovely story to act out with simple paper puppets and this is something we have been doing together at school. If you would like to have a go at home, please follow the link to get a downloadable sheet of the characters in the story that your child can cut out and play with.

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 18th March

literacy

The children have now learned by heart and written their shortened version of ‘On the Way Home’ by Jill Murphy. Make sure you get a performance at home, they were rather fabulous! This week the children will invent their own adventures, with their own exciting characters to add to the tale. The children will concentrate on creating an interesting middle part for each character using different vocabulary and adding conjunctions to add detail to sentences.

maths

The new maths unit this week will be measuring. By the end of the week the children will be familiar with mm, cm and m. They will have estimated, measured and compared their own heights and had a go at some simple word problems involving measures.

topic

The children continue to create a travel guide for their class country, using the information they have learned over the past weeks. This week’s main focus is human and physical features. Having learned a little about the natural features and landscapes of the habitats in their country, they will now compare these to the human or man-made features of their country. They will name famous landmarks known in their country such as the pyramids, St Basil’s cathedral, etc…

It will be a busy week this week ensuring we are all ready for our Spring show next week, how exciting!

Health and Safety Matters

We have had a small number of children riding alone in the elevator in the morning time. For their own safety, the children are not permitted to do this. Please remember that if your child is alone before 7:45am in the morning, school is not responsible for their safety. Until a register is collected by the class teacher all of those unaccompanied children are unaccounted for. In the case of a fire or an accident, this is very unsafe.

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 18th March

literacy

In Literacy this week we will be continuing our work on non-fiction texts. We will explore a variety of books and discuss what makes them fiction or non-fiction. After that, we will begin to use our current Topic learning about the weather to create our own information writing.

By the end of the week, we will be able to:

• Confidently discuss the features of non-fiction texts
• Identify important information from research to include in our own writing.

Check out this video for a brief introduction to information texts!

Home Learning Task:

Research about extreme weather, e.g. hurricanes, floods, tornados etc, to bring in after the Spring holiday. This could be notes made from videos the children have watched, or books they have read. This will help us after the holiday to carry on our own interesting non-fiction writing.

maths

This week in maths we will be consolidating what we already know. Classes will focus on individual areas which need revision.

topic

Over the next week Year 1 will be continuing to get ready for their Spring Concert on March 26th. Please let teachers know if there have been any changes to your travel plans and if the children will not be in school for the show.

During Topic the children will also continue to look at the different seasons and weather, working on some Art work and researching different types of weather.
