Month: March 2018
For week commencing Sunday, 4th March
Spring concert – Our show will be in a few weeks’ time. If you know you won’t be in school on Tuesday 27th March, please let your child’s teacher know so they plan appropriately for their show.
Recyclable materials – if you have any more recyclable material suitable to help us build an animal from our chosen country. Please send in asap.
This week the children will be studying Jill Murphy’s text, Peace at Last. They will analyse the language in the book, looking for new words and finding their meanings, and thinking about their favourite words and phrases from the text. We will try to focus mainly on the children’s understanding and analysis of the text from a reading perspective. This will help them later, when answering reading comprehension questions, where they need to provide opinions or explanations.
Why not read some Jill Murphy stories at home?
Our fractions unit continues, this week the children will learn about quarters and thirds. They should identify these in a shape and work them out as a fraction of a quantity too. EG. ¼ of 8. By the end of the week we will apply this knowledge to some word problems.
Some children will be able to identify more than one of each, 2/4 or ¾ for example.
The children continue to learn about their class country. What is your class country? Is it Russia? Or Brazil?….
This week they will learn more about the culture of the country. Maybe they will hear the music, or see some dance, discuss the sports and they will learn an old traditional story from their country too.
The children will use all the information they learn to create a travel guide for their country.

Please note this is a basic overview of the planning for this week. It is impossible to cover in this outline all the learning that takes place during a week.
We have thoroughly enjoyed ‘Book Week’ this week. At BSB Infant School we love reading and ‘Book Week’ is always the perfect way to celebrate our enthusiasm with a range of book-related, exciting activities!
Children had a lot of fun dressing up on Wednesday. I know that costumes don’t just magic themselves off a shelf and onto children. Thank you to parents for their support with costumes – the children looked magnificent and it contributed to really magical buzz around the school! As usual, children and staff really entered into the spirit.
The week was a great success and we are already looking forward to next year! Look at all our wonderful photos of children and teachers around the school.
Book Cover Doors
We challenged each class to turn their classroom door into a book cover! The transformation of our school is magnificent as doors throughout the school have been made into our favourite books and authors. As you can imagine, it makes our hallways look wonderful.
Check out the amazing classroom doors below.
During this week a different parent from each class surprised the students and brought a favourite book in to read and share. Some parents have dressed up, brought along props and had great fun bringing stories to life.
The children enjoyed playing a variety of Book Week related games with Miss Eman during their Library time as well.
Congratulations to all our ‘Super Stars’ this week!
Wishing everyone a relaxing weekend!
Week Commencing 4th March
This week we will be learning the oa sound as in boat and goal. Please visit Geraldine the Giraffe and Mr Thorne below to find out more:
If the children would like to each bring a small oa object (labelled with their name if they want it back) or a story about a boat, or a goat or any other oa thing, the teachers would love to see them.
Blending practice is available at the Dinosaur Egg Game at http://www.ictgames.com/dinosaurEggs_phonics/ on level 28 which focuses on the oo digraph.
The tricky word we will be learning is were, as in, “were you hot on the beach?”
In Maths we will be learning about doubles, building on from the understanding that a double is like a pair of something. We will use lots of practical and art activities to make representations of doubles, and calculate what double particular numbers is.
A fun activity for home would be to sort a set of dominoes into doubles and not doubles.
Our topic focus this half-term is Up In The Air. This week we will be finding out what we already know about air and how it can be used as a force! As preparation for the week why not make a balloon rocket. The instructions can be found at:

Birthday Cupcakes Thank you to everyone who has sent in cupcakes to celebrate their child’s birthdays. They are much appreciated. This is, however, a polite reminder that the cupcakes need to be individually packaged to be sent home, or accompanied by a roll of 26 plastic bags so that they can be hygienically transported.
Week Commencing 4th March
Our new topic for this half term is ‘Once Upon a Time’. It is a theme chock full of different stories and we will be encouraging the children to re-tell the stories they know, as well as create new stories of their own. Key skills we will be working on include: sequencing events in a story using images; using gesture and voice to help tell a story; using props such as puppets to help tell a story and drawing our own images to represent a story. Different classes may cover different stories depending on the interests of the children, however, there are some core texts that we will all cover over the course of this half term. They are: The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and The Enormous Turnip.
One version of the Three Little Pigs which follows the storyline of the traditional tale can be viewed below:
Our literacy is linked with our topic, particularly as we will be sequencing stories. If you want to have a go at home, please follow the link to the attached file to some nursery rhyme sequencing activities.
We will also be continuing to develop our rhyming skills throughout this half term. If you want some ideas of games to try at home please see the following link: https://fun-a-day.com/rhyming-activities-for-children/
In maths we will be matching a quantity to a numeral. The number 3 will be figuring frequently given the names of our stories! How many little pigs, billy goats gruff are there now? 🙂
In Arabic we will be learning:
- Topic: Farm Animals (Rabbit).
We will learn about the rabbit’s habits and where it lives and eats.
- Read and colour the letter Ra’a (ر).
- Pronounce at least 3 words that contain the letter.
- Color: Purple.
- Story: أنشودة حرف (ر).
راء رجل عرف الدين
