Arabic Activities Day

The students in Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a fabulous ‘Arabic Activities Day’ this week. They  participated in activities which taught them about various occupations. From learning which medical instruments a doctor uses, to creating colourful paper clothing as a tailor, the children enjoyed pretending to be mini professionals. It was the perfect way to practice their Arabic speaking and listening skills.

Here are a few photographs from the special day:

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 29th April

literacy

Literacy takes a non-fiction route this week. Alongside our topic unit of explorers, we will read and explore the biographies of some famous pioneers. The children will practise their reading and comprehension skills. They will make predictions, answer simple retrieval questions and more complex inference questions and they will make summaries about what they have read. By the end of the week the children should have learned new explorer facts and been able to record them effectively.

Which super vocabulary have you found in your reading books this week? Did you find any words that you didn’t know before?

maths

Our focus this week is on time. The children must learn to tell the time at o’ clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past. More able pupils will be able to read anytime in 5 minute intervals.

Ask your child: how many hours in one day? How many seconds in one minute? How many minutes in one hour? How many days in one week?

topic

Our sewing journey will continue until each class has completed their sewing project. Watch out for the finished product.

Alongside this they will begin a few weeks of investigating the sea and sea explorers. This begins with a science experiment related to floating and sinking and a revisit to our atlases to recall the continents and oceans of the world.

reminders

Pioneer’s Day

Please get those Pioneer projects started! On Tuesday afternoon, 13th June, the parents will be invited into school to attend the children’s own Waxwork Museum. The children should begin to research a famous explorer or pioneer at home, someone that they would like to be on the day.

Each child will dress up as their explorer/pioneer and should have prepared 5 questions at home. They must learn some facts about their explorer so that they can answer these questions.

Children’s jackets/jumpers

While it is hotting up outside, the children often feel a little colder inside under the AC units. It is not always possible to turn the AC off, when many of the children are still warm, so children should continue to bring their over wear in case they are cold in class.

Swimming

Swimming lessons have now commenced for some classes. Please remember that swimming is part of the curriculum and it is expected that all children will swim. A doctor’s note must be provided if your child is unable to join their session. They MUST wear a swim cap in the pool and must be able to dress and undress themselves quickly to be ready for their slot.

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 29th April

literacy

This week we will be revisiting and building on our knowledge of suffixes and prefixes, also past and present tense vocabulary and synonyms.

Over the weekend would be a good opportunity to discuss where the children visited on their school trip, using the past tense, what they enjoyed and what they would like to do differently if they went again.

maths

This week we will be applying our knowledge of halving and quartering to experiments and investigations involving capacity and weight. We will then be applying this knowledge to word problems too.

Try measuring and weighing at home by helping in the kitchen.

topic

Next week will see the result of all of our learning on buildings and materials, as we undertake our exciting project ‘Build it up Bahrain’.

We will explore the use of 3D shapes in architecture, and draw upon observations from our bus trip to recreate some of the most iconic buildings from around Bahrain, using recycled materials.

Watch this video for more information on some of Bahrain’s significant structures.

Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to be a part of ‘Build it up Bahrain’ Day. For more information, or to provide recycled materials for the project, please speak to your class teacher.

literacy

This week we will be learning the nd consonant blend as in hand and send.  Please see the Alphablocks episode below which covers nd along with some other blends with include the ‘n’ sound.

For additional practice the children could hunt for nd words in a book that they enjoy at home; if they list the nd words the class teachers would really love to see them.

If the children would like to each bring a small nd object (labelled with their name if they want it back) or a story about sand, a panda or any other nd thing, the teachers would love to share them with the class.

The tricky word we will be learning is, oh. On the way to school in the car the children could practise saying oh in different voices; as though sad, tired, excited, like a fairy, like a granny ……

maths

In Maths we will be learning about comparative weight. As well as using such vocabulary as heavy, heavier, heaviest, light, lighter, lightest the children will be investigating different ways of comparing weight such using a plank or a coat hanger!

To revise how balance scales show something is lighter or heavier there is a simple game at http://www.lcfclubs.com/lcf-maths/flash04/z04-games/z04-heavier-and-lighter.asp

If your child is fascinated by this activity the questions at https://www.mathplayground.com/balance_scales.html are so much trickier.

topic

In topic we are learning about trails, linking our Maths work on position and direction and how a postman follows a set route. The children will be exploring other types of trails seen in nature, and use this as a prompt for art and craft activities.

reminders

Swimming Lessons will continue for the rest of this term. Please ensure towels, caps, goggles, swimming costumes etc. are all labelled with your child’s name and class.

The Reception Summer Concert will be on Thursday 21st June.  Please inform your class teacher if your child will not be in school on that date.

Spare Clothing  If a child has an accident at school they are loaned spare clothing from Ms Sabera’s store in the Reception Corridor.  We ask that the clothes are returned to school freshly laundered as soon as possible.  Unfortunately not everyone remembers to return these items of clothing (dresses, shirts, trousers, shorts, underpants, panties, socks etc) and the store is now almost empty.  If your child has ever borrowed some of our spare clothes please could you check your cupboards, and if you find anything that may have come from school, please return it. It would also be helpful if nannies could be reminded of the need to return any borrowed clothes, too.

If you have any school uniform or undergarments which your child has grown out of, and you no longer have a use for, we would be very grateful to have them to add to our store of spare clothing.

Week Commencing 29th April

topic

As we continue our topic, ‘Under the Sea,’ each teacher is following the particular interests of the children in their class. We hope you are enjoying the ocean scene that is developing in the Nursery corridor 🙂

If you want to find out some more information about any of the animals that your child is interested in at home, the Octonauts have some lovely episodes that you can explore together. For one that is all about whales just watch the video below. We would love it if your child could come into school and teach us something about a sea animals that they have learned at home!

literacy

We are beginning to use our listening ears to hear the sounds that are in simple 3 letter words for example c – a – t makes the word cat when we put the sounds together. We are not looking at any letters, the critical skill is to hear the sounds and then blend them into the word. You could play a game together like the one in the video below if you would like to practise at home 🙂

maths

We are continuing to work on matching a quantity to a number in our maths work. You can have a go at home with our fish counting game at the following link:

For week commencing Sunday, 22nd April.

reminders

Pioneer’s Day

On Tuesday 13th June, a long way off we know, parents will be invited into school on the afternoon to attend the children’s Waxwork Museum.

Now, the children should begin to research a famous explorer or pioneer that they would like to be on the day.

Each child should dress up as their explorer/pioneer and should prepare 5 questions for the parents to ask them. The children must learn some facts about their explorer so that they can answer these questions.

Children’s jackets/jumpers

While it is hotting up outside, the children often feel a little colder inside under the AC units. It is not always possible to turn the AC off, when many of the children are still warm, so children should continue to bring their over wear in case they are cold in class.

Clubs

Clubs are now up and running, children are to be collected from the playground promptly

literacy

After a week of Pinman, we have realised that he is a gently giant, not the nasty character we assumed him to be. This week we will write the story of Pinman. We will write the story over 3 days ensuring that our beginning, middle and ending are filled with detail.

Which new vocabulary can you use in your story this week? Can you tell the story to someone at home? Say aloud each sentence then try to make it even better.

maths

This week’s maths lessons will be completely based on problem solving. The children must know how to add, subtract, divide and multiply but more importantly they must know how to solve problems using these skills.

When the children read a word problem, they must look for clues to work out which of the 4 operations (+ – x ÷ ) to use. The method they use is the one they feel most confident with.

Note that after Y2 children are not supposed to rely on the number square in order to add/subtract tens and ones.

topic

Our sewing journey continues for the next few weeks. The children have watched an animated version of the story ‘The Journey’ and discussed the adventures that the girl in the story drew. Each class has now created their own story setting; under the sea, the forest, space, the seaside etc and are beginning to create a sewing project related to this. Watch out for the finished product in a few weeks.
