Year 2 Bulletin w/c 20th May
For week commencing Sunday, 20th May
We will be comparing our story, Lost and Found, from last week to a video story of the same name. We want the children to draw out the similarities and differences between the two versions. Later in the week we will then compare it to a different story by the same author, The Way Back Home. The children will also apply some of their reading skills, such as Suki sequencing, to the texts explored.
The next theme in our ‘measures’ unit is capacity or volume. Again, the children will need to be able to estimate and measure the capacity of a liquid in ml (millilitres) and L (litres). We will continue to compare volumes using the more than and less than symbols ( < > ). During the week we will also read scales showing temperatures and introduce the symbol for degrees Celsius (°) before applying our measuring knowledge and skills to word problems and reasoning problems.
CHECK AT HOME: Can your child identify if there is more than 1L of liquid or less than 1L of liquid in a container?
Have you completed your mymaths this week?
We continue our study of air travel this week; different types of transport used in the air and the invention of the aircraft. Our fiction link will be The Way Back Home, a lovely story by Oliver Jeffers. This week’s investigation will be related to the story and to parachutes. The children will use their developing knowledge of properties of materials to create a parachute. All the parachutes will be tested and results recorded in a scientific table.
Children’s jackets/jumpers
While it is hotting up outside, the children often feel a little colder inside under the AC units. It is not always possible to turn the AC off, when many of the children are still warm, so children should continue to bring their over wear in case they are cold in class.
SWIMMING lessons
Please remember that swimming is part of the curriculum and it is expected that all children will swim. A doctor’s note must be provided if your child is unable to join their session. They MUST wear a swim cap in the pool and must be able to dress and undress themselves quickly to be ready for their slot.
Pioneer’s Day
Have you chosen your famous explorer or pioneer? Each child must dress up as their chosen explorer and research 5 questions and answers to share with their audience.
The parents will be invited to the children’s ‘waxworks museum’ on Tuesday afternoon, 12th June.
