Infant School News 2

Dear Parents,

We were delighted with the turn out for the Nursery Welcome Talk yesterday. It was lovely to see such enthusiasm and we felt that there was already a great sense of camaraderie between parents in the audience.

If you were unable to attend the workshop, you may find the attached presentation helpful. Nursery Welcome Talk Presentation

Curriculum Workshops

When planning curriculum workshops for parents it is almost impossible to find a time that is convenient for everyone. Some families find it difficult to arrange childcare in the evenings and others have work commitments during the day. The next curriculum workshop is by the Arabic Department and will take place next Wednesday, 3rd October.

For parents of children in Nursery and Reception it will take place at 11:45am and for parents of children in Year 1 and Year 2 at 1:45pm. Children will be supervised for the duration.

Full Steam Ahead!

The main feeling across the school this week is that the children are now really getting stuck into the curriculum. Most noticeable of all was the development of the concentration span and focus of the children in Reception as they embark upon the journey of learning to read.

Year 12 Drama Treat

There are also moments of lightness and fun and one of the advantages of having a through Infant, Junior and Senior school on one campus came to light when the Year 12 Drama students treated the children to impromptu performances of Sinbad, The Golden Fish and Rapunzel.

Individual Photographs

The Infant School students will have their individual photographs taken next week.  Please refer to the timetable below to find out which day your child’s class will have their photographs taken. Children should be dressed in their standard BSB uniform. If you are interested in scheduling a sibling photograph, please visit our Business Development office.

Nursery

For week commencing Sunday, 30th September

Topic: Bears

Math: Bigger and smaller

Letters and Sounds: Listening to sounds around the school

This week we will be reading many different stories about bears. Our particular favourites are; We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, Where’s my Teddy and The Everywhere Bear. If you have any other bear books at home we love it when the children share their own story books. We will be discovering what they eat, where they sleep and the different species of bear you can find.

Teddy Bears Picnic

On Thursday 4th of October the children are invited to come to school wearing their pyjamas and bring their teddy bears. You may pack an extra treat in their snack box for this special day.

Individual School Photographs

Please could you make sure that your child attends school in their full uniform on this day. Children with long hair do need to tie it back,  and if all the children could be in their smart black school shoes that would be great.

Reception

For week commencing Sunday, 30th September

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear, say and blend two more letter sounds: t and p. This could be reinforced at home by watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmlzzMTqBxo  (t) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0akp_j1nbc  (p).

To help recognise the letter shapes which have been introduced so far the children could also play the first level of Phoneme Pop at http://www.ictgames.com/phonemePopLS_v2.html.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with t and p. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

maths

In Maths this week we are focusing on representing the numbers 1 – 5 in many different ways. By using dotted dice and dominoes in many different activities the children will be learning to recall the quantity a particular dot pattern represents without having to count the dots each time the pattern is seen. Likewise the children will be building up their fast recall of quantities represented by various finger patterns.

Playing dominoes at home over the weekend, if you already have a set of dotty dominoes, would be super preparation for the week.

topic

This week each class will be exploring the effect of light on colour. Some classes may be asked to bring a torch into school if they have one.

arabic1

This week students will be studying :

  • The Arabic letter ( ب ) : (Bint – girl  ) (Bata – Duck ) ( Baeit – House )
  • School unit : ( Saboora – Board ) ( Hakeeba – Bag ) ( Alwan – Colours )
  • Song : The letter( ب ) .

سيدرس الطالب هذا الأسبوع :

* حرف ( ب )  ( بطة – بيت – بنت – بقرة )

* وحدة مدرستي (  سبورة – حقيبة – ألوان )

* أنشودة الحرف ( ب )

* نشاط : عمل نشاط تطبيقا على الحرف المدروس ( بطة ).

النشيد    (بٌ بطة نطت نطة       وقعت ضحِكت منها القطة )

reminders

Book bags should be brought into school everyday as they are useful for carrying home artwork, notes etc as well as a Library book. Please ensure that only books and papers are in the book bag so that they are not damaged by bulky items, food etc.

Bags generally The only other items the children need are their cap, snack box and water bottle.  It make it much easier for the children at snack time/home time if these items are not packed together into a larger bag.

Long Days start on Sunday 7th October. Classroom doors will continue to open at 7.45am but children should not be collected from the classroom until 2pm.

Individual Photos will take place this week. Please see the schedule below.

Year 1 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 30th September

literacy

Next week, Year 1 will be using the story “Not Now Bernard” to explore sequencing events. We will use our imaginations to create our own monster, and use time vocabulary such as first, then, next and finally to support us in creating our own stories.

Take a look at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8TpSVkMTcM to hear the story!

Handwriting

CLICK HERE to download a powerpoint for parents showing the correct letter formation for pre cursive letters.

maths

Next week we will be looking at addition facts and number bonds up to 10. We will learn how to read and write the addition sign, and how to make use of addition facts, e.g. 3+2=5, to start writing our own number sentences. We will also use a whole-part model to support our number and addition understanding.

topic

In Topic we will be looking at events from our life in a timeline, and use our Literacy learning of sequencing by thinking about past, present and future.

To support children in these discussions, please send in one item of significance from the past, e.g. a photograph, baby blanket or certificate, that the children can talk about.

Year 2 Bulletin w/c 30th Sept

Year 2 Bulletin

For week commencing Sunday, 30th September

literacy

In Literacy the children will continue to describe Harry from the story Harry and the Dinosaurs go to School. This time they will use all the interesting adjectives about Harry’s appearance and personality, which they generated last week to write a character description of Harry.

Can you remember to put a capital letter at the start of a new sentence and full stop at the end of the sentence?

The children will also be using joining conjunctions to join two sentences together. Can you use the word AND and BECAUSE in a sentence?

maths

This week in Maths, we will begin to look at Addition and Subtraction as related facts. We will be using the part-whole model to demonstrate the relationship between the two operations and how they are inverse and part of the same family.

maths w1

For example

20 + 3 = 23   &   23 – 3 = 20

We will continue to look at the greater than >, less than < and same as = signs, however, this time the children will compare number sentences.

For example

6 + 4    ?    6 + 5

should be

6 + 4    <    6 + 5

The children will also begin to understand how calculations with similar digits are related.

For example

If 2 + 5 = 7  then  20 + 50 = 70

topic

This week, Topic is all about children’s favourite thing- TOYS. We will be looking at toys from the past and comparing them to the toys the children play with today. We will look at playground games and the traditional games played in Bahrain, including Sabah, Sikaina and Khabsa. The children will use the questionnaire completed at home by an older relative to discuss what game/toys they used to play.

If you have an old toy at home, why not bring in it to school and share it with your class.

The children will end the week by creating their own new playground game. They will need to make a set of rules for the game, which they will test and play with other children in the playground.
