When we get back after half term we will be focusing on talking about what we did in the holiday. On the Saturday night or Sunday morning before your child returns to school please talk about the highlights of your holiday so your child finds it easier to talk about when their teacher asks.

We will also be moving our topic onto wild animals. We will be looking at animals that live in the jungle, rainforest, desert etc. We will be learning the names of the animals and starting to look at the habitats they live in.

We will be making rainmakers so please could you provide an empty water bottle for your child to use for this activity. We will be using them to sing with, dance with and tell stories with.

Carnival of the Animals

On Thursday 22nd of November we will be celebrating the end of our animal topic with a dress up day. Your child can come to school dressed as any animal. We love to see homemade costumes. We invite the parents to come and take pictures and listen to a quick song we have been learning between 7:45 and 8:00.

We would also ask you to bring some animal themed food for the children to share for their snack.

Reminders

Reception

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds (c), (k) and the end sound (ck).

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck.  Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with c and k. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

We will also be learning the tricky words the and no. Tricky words are words which would not usually be created by blending the individual letter sounds together. Searching for these words in the children’s own story books is an excellent way of practising recognition. Listening to the tricky word song found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMyssfAUx0 is an excellent way to help children recognise them.

maths

In Maths this week we are learning to use everyday language related to money, eg money, cash, price, cost, how much? change, coin, note …. There is practice counting coins at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money clicking on ‘one coin’ and 1p up tp 10p.

topic

This week each Reception class will be investigating the questions: why do animals move? How do animals move? And which body parts enable animals to move?

reminders

Reading Talk

There will be a talk about learning to read in Reception at the BSB, and how the children can be helped at home, on Tuesday 6th November 1-2pm.

Cardigans & Jumpers

Some children are beginning to find the classroom ac units a little cool now that the weather is becoming more pleasant.  It is not possible to make the temperature suit everyone so if your child is complaining of the being cold in the classroom please can you send a school uniform jumper or cardigan with them to school each day. As jumpers and cardigans are removed and put back on over the course of a school day it is particularly important that they are labelled with your child’s name and class.

Year 1 Bulletin

literacy

In Literacy we will start to explore the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. We will begin by learning about the features of non-fiction books, e.g. contents page, glossary, photographs, captions and labels, and move on to investigate the purpose of different non-fiction texts.

You can help your child at home by showing them a non-fiction book such as a travel guide, newspaper article or information leaflet. Can they identify how it is different to one of their reading books?

maths

In Maths we will begin to explore and use vocabulary such as equal to, greater than, more than and less than. We will be comparing groups of objects to help us with this, as well as learning how to say and write comparison sentences, e.g “Five is greater than three.”

We will also be consolidating our previous learning, by revisiting addition and subtraction, and practising the various strategies we have learnt to help us with different number problems.

Why not practise with your child at home, by adding and subtracting small groups of objects. Can your child identify which is more than?

topic

We will begin our new topic of Celebrations this week, with a fantastic exploration into the Diwali celebration! We will start by hearing the story of Diwali, and then learn about all of the different ways that people celebrate around the world.

On Wednesday 7th November, please send your child into school wearing light / bright colours, to mark the beginning of our new learning on celebrations.

reminders

Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.

literacy

Katie.pngIn Literacy this week, the children will begin to learn about stories from different parts of the world. This will be stories about Katie Morag who is a feisty, red-headed girl who lives with her family on the Scottish Island of Struay. We will be focusing on the setting of the story and linking this into our Topic lessons.

While we read all the adventures of Katie Morag, we will be asking the children different questions to help build their understanding of the story. These questions all come under PRIVS dogs

Reading.PNG

The children will begin to familiarise themselves with these types of questions and use the PRIVS dogs to help them do this.

The children will continue to use adjectives and joining conjunctions to describe a setting. They will be introduced to but, when and or as new conjunctions to use in their writing.

maths

In Maths, the children will continue to subtract numbers using the method of exchanging TENS into ONES. and demonstrating this using a blank number line. They will begin to practise this method by subtracting two 2-digit numbers, crossing the tens.

The below examples show how this is done concretely.

34 – 16 =

maths 1

34 has 3 tens and 4 ones. To be able to subtract 16 (partitioned as 1 ten and 6 ones), we need 6 ones. So exchange one ten for 10 ones. Now we can subtract 1 ten and 6 ones to give us the answer using concrete objects.

The below example shows a pictorial method for subtraction, using a blank number line.

51 – 12 =

maths 2
In this example we partition the 12 into 1 ten and 2 ones so we would subtract the 10 and then the ones. For this method, the children need to be confident in subtracting 10 from any given number.

topic

In Topic this week, the children will be making links to the stories of Katie Morag from their Literacy lessons, to begin their fist science unit all about materials. We will be sorting and classifying everyday materials according to their properties.

As the children begin to learn more about Katie Morag and the rainy island she lives, they will conduct an experiment to find out which materials are suitable for a raincoat. The children will predict, conduct and conclude. We will be thinking about the following questions

  1. What material could we use to make a raincoat?
  2. How will we test the materials?
  3. What predictions will we make about the materials?
  4. Which materials are waterproof/not?
  5. Why would certain materials not make a good raincoat?

This will lead into learning about the Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh who was a Scottish chemist and the inventor of waterproof fabric.

We would like the children to explore different waterproof materials. If you have any of the following items at home, umbrellas, wellies, raincoats, shower caps, we would appreciate it if you can bring them into school for this week.

reminders

As the weather is getting cooler, the children may start to feel cold in class while the AC’s are still needed and when going outside to play, therefore children will need a BSB jumper or cardigan. All uniform need to be labelled with the child’s name and class number.

The school will be closed on Friday 26th October – Saturday 3rd of November, inclusive.

Next Week

Topic: On the Farm

Math: Accurately counting actions e.g. claps, jumps, steps.

Letters and Sounds: Environmental sounds: Recognising noises you hear on the farm

Look what fun all the classes have been having this week learning about the farm.

Some classes have been focusing on the animals you find on a farm. The other classes have been focusing on plants, crops and what grows on a farm.

We will be continuing to work on careful counting. We will be trying to count actions as well as objects and remembering to stop when we have reached the correct amount. It would help if at home you count as you walk up the stairs, or how many segments there are in their orange etc.

We will be moving onto listening to sounds around the farm that not only the animals make but also the tractor, the gate, the windmill etc.

Sickness

As you know it’s this time of year when all the illnesses surface as the weather changes. We would just like to remind if your child has a fever in the morning, please do not give them medication and send them to school. This is precisely when they are most infectious and, as a result, are very likely to spread the illness to other children and staff. The Panadol does NOT stop the infection.

Please see below a friendly reminder of our school guidelines which state that you should not send your child to school if they have the following:

  1. Fever (37.5 and above)
  2. Vomiting
  3. Diarrhoea
  4. A Sore Throat
  5. Bad severe cold with a very runny nose or bad cough, especially if it has kept the child awake at night.
  6. Skin rash

Students with the symptoms listed above need to stay home for 24 hours after the symptoms subsist. If these symptoms remain for longer than a day, contact your doctor to see if your child needs to be evaluated.

With these guidelines, we mean to serve the best interests of all the children and staff in our school.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Infant School Nurse.

Reception

For the week commencing Sunday, 21st October

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds (g) and (o).

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with g and o (it is the o sound as in octopus or orange not owl o). If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

In class we will be focusing on the words on and off. Encouraging your child to practise taking their cardigan/jumper off and on independently would really help with one planned classroom activity!

We will also be learning the tricky words I and go. Tricky words are words which would not usually be created by blending the individual letter sounds together. Searching for these words in the children’s own story books is an excellent way of practising recognition.

Thank you for the kind donation of old magazines last week, they were much appreciated.

maths

In Maths this week we are learning about repeating patterns involving 2 or more variables (different things) and even some doubles. There is some super additional practice in the shapes pattern game at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns.

topic

This week each Reception class will be experimenting with colour and texture.

reminders

Single Use Plastics

Some children are bringing a single use plastic bottle of water to school every day.  We encourage the children to think about looking after our world (the environment) so can we please ask that you invest in a reusable metal water bottle (if you have been providing single use plastic bottles) and clearly label it with your child’s name and class instead.

Year 1 Bulletin

For the week commencing Sunday, 21st October

literacy

This week in Literacy we will be looking at instructions. We will explore the importance of instructions by playing a variety of games, and explore the use of time connectives e.g. first, next, then and bossy verbs e.g. mix, wash, stir when writing them. We will end the week by watching the story of ‘Meg and Mog – Owl’s Birthday’ and creating our own instructions for making a birthday cake!

Watch the story of Owl’s Birthday here:

Can your child remember in what order the ingredients went into the mixture?

maths

This week in Maths we will be investigating subtraction. We will explore the various ways of completing subtraction problems using cubes and number lines. We will also begin to learn the vocabulary of subtraction, e.g. finding the difference, and begin to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction problems.

topic

This week in Topic we will be learning all about the weather! We will explore a variety of different weather and watch some weather reports to help us with this. We will also investigate the different seasons, and explore the ways the weathers and days change from Summer to Winter.

Watch this for a preview of the Seasons Song!

reminders

Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.

End of day

As you’re already aware, the corridors and walkways are very busy at pick-up time. At the end of the day teachers escort children to a number of different end-of-day locations, and it can be difficult to safely navigate large groups through the corridors at this time. With this in mind, please ensure that when you have collected your child, you exit the building as soon as possible. If your child has Academies, or another engagement on school premises later in the afternoon, please make your way to the cafeteria to wait.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

The Year 1 workshop will be held in Year 1 classrooms on Wednesday 24th October at 1:15.
