In Literacy this week, the children will begin to learn about stories from different parts of the world. This will be stories about Katie Morag who is a feisty, red-headed girl who lives with her family on the Scottish Island of Struay. We will be focusing on the setting of the story and linking this into our Topic lessons.
While we read all the adventures of Katie Morag, we will be asking the children different questions to help build their understanding of the story. These questions all come under PRIVS dogs
The children will begin to familiarise themselves with these types of questions and use the PRIVS dogs to help them do this.
The children will continue to use adjectives and joining conjunctions to describe a setting. They will be introduced to but, when and or as new conjunctions to use in their writing.
In Maths, the children will continue to subtract numbers using the method of exchanging TENS into ONES. and demonstrating this using a blank number line. They will begin to practise this method by subtracting two 2-digit numbers, crossing the tens.
The below examples show how this is done concretely.
34 – 16 =
34 has 3 tens and 4 ones. To be able to subtract 16 (partitioned as 1 ten and 6 ones), we need 6 ones. So exchange one ten for 10 ones. Now we can subtract 1 ten and 6 ones to give us the answer using concrete objects.
The below example shows a pictorial method for subtraction, using a blank number line.
51 – 12 =
In this example we partition the 12 into 1 ten and 2 ones so we would subtract the 10 and then the ones. For this method, the children need to be confident in subtracting 10 from any given number.
In Topic this week, the children will be making links to the stories of Katie Morag from their Literacy lessons, to begin their fist science unit all about materials. We will be sorting and classifying everyday materials according to their properties.
As the children begin to learn more about Katie Morag and the rainy island she lives, they will conduct an experiment to find out which materials are suitable for a raincoat. The children will predict, conduct and conclude. We will be thinking about the following questions
- What material could we use to make a raincoat?
- How will we test the materials?
- What predictions will we make about the materials?
- Which materials are waterproof/not?
- Why would certain materials not make a good raincoat?
This will lead into learning about the Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh who was a Scottish chemist and the inventor of waterproof fabric.
We would like the children to explore different waterproof materials. If you have any of the following items at home, umbrellas, wellies, raincoats, shower caps, we would appreciate it if you can bring them into school for this week.
As the weather is getting cooler, the children may start to feel cold in class while the AC’s are still needed and when going outside to play, therefore children will need a BSB jumper or cardigan. All uniform need to be labelled with the child’s name and class number.
The school will be closed on Friday 26th October – Saturday 3rd of November, inclusive.
