Year 2 Bulletin

For the week commencing Sunday, 21st October

literacy

The children will continue to learn about following and writing instructions and what the ‘Steps to Success’ for writing good instructions are.

This includes

  • time conjunctions e.g. first, next, after that
  • verbs e.g. put, mix, stir, get
  • adverbs e.g. quickly, carefully, sensibly
  • correct order
  • present tense

Each class will make hummus. They’ll discuss what ingredients are needed, what equipment will be used and the exact steps needs to make it. The children will then work in groups to create their instructions for how to make hummus, making sure they are following the ‘Steps to Success’. This will lead into them presenting their instructions as a cooking show, to the rest of their class.

maths

The children will begin to add 2 two-digit numbers, crossing the tens. For example 64 + 17. Again this will involve partitioning the numbers into FAMILIES of TENS and ONES. The children will use the number 10 as our special number to exchange the ONES to TENS.

We will then move onto subtraction. This will involve the inverse of addition. The children will now need to exchange the TENS into ONES so that they can subtract numbers. For example 22-7=

Children will use the 10 as our special number by subtracting 2 to make 20 and then take away 5 to get to their answer.

This can also be shown on a blank number line as

Nursery

For the week commencing Sunday, 14th October

Next Week

Topic: On the Farm

Math: Accurately counting actions e.g. claps, jumps, steps.

Letters and Sounds: Environmental sounds: Recognising noises you hear on the farm

Next week we will be discovering what a farm is. We will be finding out what a farm looks like and which animals live there. We will be learning about farmers and what their job is. Our stories we like to read during this topic are; Farmyard Hullabaloo, What the Ladybird Heard, Apple Tree Farm, Muddled Up Farm, Farmer Duck, The Scarecrow’s Wedding and A Squash and a Squeeze. As always if you have any books at home about the farm we would love to read them at school.

We are learning to count not only objects but also actions. We will be playing ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf’ to help us carefully count out our steps. We will also be counting as we march, click, hop etc.  I wonder if you can think of some games to play at home to also practise this.

We will be listening to sounds we find on the farm and just by listening we will see if we can identify what made that sound. Please use this link so you can try this at home:

Talking About our Weekends

We are working on talking in the past tense so on Sunday morning we will be asking the children what they got up to at the weekend. It would be really helpful for the children if you could talk through this with them before they come to school. This helps refresh their memories.

Playing After School

Please note that once our school day has finished the school playgrounds are out of action for Nursery free play. The other older children use these areas for their outdoor learning environment as well as planned teaching and learning activities. Thank you for your cooperation.

Reception

For the week commencing Sunday, 14th October

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds (m) and (d).

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with m and d. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

We make use of magazines for a variety of literacy and art based activities in Reception. If you have any old magazines that you do not want please send them in to school as we can make good use of them.

maths

In Maths this week we are learning the correct mathematical names for 2D shapes and how to use other related vocabulary such as sides and corners. By the end of the week we will be having creative fun investigating which 2D shapes tessellate.

If your child needs to revise the names of the basic 2D shapes they can play shape sorting at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/shape-monsters.

The teachers would appreciate it if you could e-mail them a photograph of your child with a 2D shape they have found in their own environment. This will be used in slide show to support the class learning about 2D shapes.

topic

This week each Reception class will be investigating the purpose of particular colours in our environment eg why school buses are yellow or why polar bears have white fur. On Thursday we will be learning about why the Think Pink charity uses the colour pink.

reminders

Year 1 Bulletin

For the week commencing Sunday, 14th October

literacy

This week in Literacy we will be continuing to use the story of “Not Now Bernard” to further explore sequencing a story. We will create our own storyboard to make sure we can place events in chronological order, and continue our learning of adjectives and time connectives to help us to retell the story.

maths

This week in Maths we will be continuing our exploration of addition and number bonds. We will learn how to add using a number line, revisit our use of the whole-part model, and use a variety of objects to help us. We will end the week by introducing the subtraction sign, and begin to learn how to complete subtraction problems using concrete objects.

topic

This week in Topic we will become street detectives, using I-pads and Google Maps to explore Bahrain and the surrounding area. We will learn all about the different continents, and create our own maps of the school, as well as discussing the difference between the natural and man-made things that make up our environment.

This weekend, take a look at Google Maps with your child, and see if you can find your house!

Year 2 Bulletin

For the week commencing Sunday, 14th October

literacy

In Literacy this week the children will begin a new unit of learning which is ‘Writing for Different Purposes’. We will be focusing on instruction writing, looking at ordering and following instructions. The children will be applying important elements to instruction writing. This includes using time conjunctions, bossy verbs and adverbs.

  • Do you know what these are?
  • At home, can you make a list of verbs and adverbs?

We will also be reviewing the importance of writing a recount. Following our trip to Bahrain Museum, the children will independently write a recount all about their trip, remembering to write in the past tense and using the correct punctuation.

A useful link to help your child with reading at home.

https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/

maths

Maths this week will focus on addition. We will begin by adding 2 digit and 1 digit numbers (not crossing tens). This will involve partitioning the numbers into  FAMILIES of TENS and ONES.

For example

12 + 6 =

14.10.18 1

So tens on one side and ones on the other

14.10.18 2

So this will be written as

10 + 6 + 2 = 18

We will then move onto adding 2 digit and 1 digit numbers (crossing the tens). However, this time this will involve learning a new method. Using our knowledge of place value, the children will use the number 10 as our special number to exchange the ONES to TENS.

For example

18 + 6 =

14.10.18 3

The children will be looking at adding two 2 digit numbers. Again we will be using our knowledge of place value to exchange ONES for TENS when adding numbers.

topic

The children will be very excited this week as we will be going on our very first year 2 trip to  Bahrain Museum. We will be looking at Bahrain ‘Then and Now’, focussing on how Bahrain has changed due to land reclamation. We will be discussing areas which did not exist 50 years ago. For example City Centre, Juffair and Amwaj.

The children will also enjoy looking at traditional Bahraini jobs. This will include a pearl diver, weaver, fisherman, baker and many more. We will look at what tools these jobs need and how easy or hard it is to do and why it is a good job to have.

reminders

Our Job fair begins on Wednesday, 24th October at 8:00am. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to come in and tell the children all about your job.

Infant School News (30th Sept – 4th Oct)

Infant School News 2

Dear Parents,

It is that lovely time of year when classes feel settled into weekly routines and the levels of trust between teachers, children and parents have been firmly established. As ever the children never fail surprise us and the children in Year 2 spoke eloquently and wrote in detail about their favourite toys in Literacy this week. There was a collective ‘Ah’, from the teachers when one little girl wrote that her favourite toy gave her ‘a feeling of love’. Another wrote that her toy made her feel love because her mummy had bought it for her and she knew her mummy loved her. Wise beyond their years!

Teddy Bears’ Picnic

The teddy bears belonging to children in Nursery enjoyed their day at school today. They particularly enjoyed listening to their owners recounting the stories ‘Where’s My Teddy?’, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ and ‘My Friend Bear’. I am not surprised they had such a lovely time, the Nursery children’s eloquence and animation was captivating.

After School Clubs

We are pleased to see so many children participating in after school clubs. They are showing wonderful stamina engaging fully in their chosen activities, even after a full day at school.

Longer Day For Reception

From Sunday, 7th October, the school day for children in Reception will end at 2:00pm. Please be prompt when collecting your child. We have considered offering a sibling holding room for children in Reception, but have decided NOT to introduce it at this point in the school year. We really want to make the transition into the longer day as smooth as possible for the children and we feel that the additional hour and a half is enough for children to cope with at this stage. We will reconsider later in the school year.

It Takes a Whole Village To Raise a Child

We have a very positive school behaviour policy. Our aim is to ‘catch children being good’ and to reinforce that behaviour. It is important that children move around the school calmly, quietly and sensibly when they are on their way to the playground or a specialist lesson. You may notice that teachers have ‘treasure’ tokens in their pockets. If they see children from other classes moving around the school particularly sensibly, even though they think their own teacher cannot see them, any member of staff can reward the sensible child by passing them a treasure token to put in their pocket.

The classes that were awarded the most tokens this week were 2.3, 1.7 and 1.8. As a result, they, and their teachers were treated to refreshing ice lollies. The children are delighted that Mr Smith has noticed some wonderfully sensible behaviour around school and has even been awarding some tokens himself.

Congratulations to this week’s Champions of the week!

We wish you all a happy and relaxing weekend.

Best Wishes,

Julie Anne Gilbert & Matt Brant

Teddy Bears Picnic

We had a wonderful day today wearing our pyjamas to school and taking our teddy bears for a picnic. Enjoy the photos!

Next Week

Topic: Forest Animals

Maths: Careful counting

Letters and Sounds: What sounds do we hear in the house?

At first we will be learning what a forest is. Then we will be investigating what they look like and finding out what animals live there. We will read some stories about forests. Our favourites are; Owl Babies, The Gruffalo, My Friend Bear, The Silent Owl and Don’t Hog the Hedge. If you have any others at home your child would like to share with the class please feel free to bring a book in.

Using stories like ‘Peace at Last’ we will be looking at noises we hear at home. I wonder what you can hear in your house… ticking clock, the hum of a fridge, a shower running? Having a silent walk around your house see if your child can identify any sounds that they can hear.

We are also working on our ‘careful counting’ this is making sure we are counting objects correctly. We will then hope to find the corresponding numeral.

Sleep

This is a reminder that children that are 3 and 4 years old should be having a minimum of 10 hours sleep a night. Please ensure your child is going to bed at a reasonable time to ensure they are receiving enough sleep to fully enjoy and thrive at school.
