Reception Bulletin w/c 7th Oct

Reception

Week commencing Sunday, 7th October

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letters (i) and (n).

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n.  Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with i and n. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

maths

In Maths this week we are focusing on counting irregular arrangements of up to 5 objects with speed and accuracy; and investigating different ways of making 4 and 5 eg 4 can be made as 1 and 3 or 2 and 2 or 4 and 0.  We will also be continuing to practise the correct formation of the digits 2, 3, 4 and 5.

If your child finds counting up to 5 objects and identifying the correct numeral for the set difficult there is some extra practice at http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/earlymath/CountAnimals1to5.htm.

topic

This week each Reception class will be investigating the way colour affects how we feel.

Longer Days

The longer day for the Reception children starts on Sunday 7th October. Children should continue to be in the classroom by 8am on a morning and should be collected promptly at 2pm in the afternoon.

The children will have one 30 minute break outside as well as snack time and lunchtime. To make sure the children are well prepared for these please can you make sure the following is sent into school every day:

  • their book bag (with their library book inside)
  • a hat/cap (labelled with their name and class)
  • a small healthy snack eg a banana, some olives or a small bunch of grapes and a carton of white milk for morning snack (please gauge the amount of snack your child needs by their appetite and how much is left uneaten)
  • Lunch eg a sandwich and a yoghurt or cereal bar (or similar)
  • a bottle of water (re-usable bottles are much better for the environment)

Please remember school policy does not permit any nut products including peanut butter sandwiches & Nutella; chocolate, candies, chips or flavoured milk.

Year 1 Bulletin

Week commencing Sunday, 7th October

literacy

Next week, Year 1 will be continuing our exploration of monsters to help us start writing sentences. We will be looking at how to use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, a full stop at the end, as well as the use of finger spaces to make sure our writing is easy to read. We will also be making sure that our words are in the correct order so that our writing makes sense!

To help the children with this, it would be useful if you could practise verbally constructing a sentence at home with them, e.g. “The big cat is black and white.”

maths

Next week in Maths we will be exploring and consolidating our learning of number bonds to 10. We will look at all the different ways to make 10, as well as using the vocabulary of “less than” and “more than”. We will use lots of different objects to help us with this and continue our learning of how to correctly write number sentences with the addition and equals signs.

topic

In Topic we will be exploring ourselves and our bodies by investigating our five senses. We will take part in a variety of activities designed to make us think about our sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. By the end of the week we will know what parts of our body are used for which sense, and will be able to describe using adjectives how something feels, looks, smells etc.

reminders

Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.

This week the children will bring home a selection of High Frequency Words for them to learn. On a 3 week cycle the children will be tested at random and then be given chance to correct any words they are still finding tricky. The aim is for the children to apply these words regularly within their writing on a day to day basis. Please take the time to revise these words with your child. Thank you!

Year 2 Bulletin

Week commencing Sunday, 7th October

literacy

This week in Literacy the children will be applying everything they have learned over the past few weeks to write their best character description of one of the characters in the story Harry and the Dinosaurs go to school.

Success.pngAs a class the children will attempt to write the Steps to Success for a good character description.

  • What are adjectives?
  • What joining conjunctions can we use to help us extend our sentences?
  • What punctuation must we always have in our writing?

These are a few things the children need to think about when writing their character description. The children will end the week by assessing their final piece of writing against the Steps to Success.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will continue to look at Addition and Subtraction. They will begin by looking at 1 more and 1 less than a number and then challenging them to adding and subtracting the numbers 2/3/4.

The children will also be looking at number bonds to 100 in tens.

For example:

20+80=100

40+60=100

This will nicely lead onto finding 10 more and 10 less than a number

For example:

10 more than 23 = 33

10 less than 46 = 36

Can you see what changes in the number and what stays the same?

Have fun on this website with interactive and challenging Maths games.

topic

In Topic this week the children will enjoy making their own clay thumb pinch pot for a tealight candle. Looking at shapes and lines, they will design the pattern they would like for their pot. The children will then make their pot using the thumb pinch technique and using clay tools they will create their pattern onto their pot. Once their pot is dried they will paint their pot in the colours of their choice. Finally, the children will evaluate their pot by answering the following questions.

  • What do you like about your pot?
  • Does your clay pot fit a tealight candle?
  • Does your clay pot look like your design?
  • How could you make it better?

reminders

To pay, sign and return the permission slip for the Bahrain Museum trip to the class teacher.

The next spelling test will take place on the week of the 21st October.
