Year 2 Curriculum Workshop – Wednesday, 7th November
A big thank you to all those parents who came to the curriculum workshops yesterday. I hope you found them useful and got a few ideas for activities that you can do at home with your child. Below is a link if you would like to provide feedback from the workshop.

This week in Literacy the children will continue to read the stories of Katie Morag. They will begin to use adjectives to describe a setting by looking at the Island of Struay. The children will be encouraged to use their senses when describing a setting- see, hear, smell and feel.
To support this, the children will be introduced to Expanded Noun Phrases (ENP’s) which incorporates using 2 adjectives to describe a noun e.g. deep, cold river. The children will begin to use a comma when writing a list of adjectives and will explore different sentences openers.
Once the children have written their setting description, they will attempt to uplevel their work against the Steps to Success (S2S).
This week in Maths, the children will begin to learn about the British money. They will begin to count money in pence- 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p and then count money in pounds ￡1, ￡2, ￡5 ￡10 and ￡20. The children will then count both pence and pounds using the word ‘and’ to combine the money together.
For example £2 + £1 + 20p + 10p = £3 and 30p
Concretely the children will make an amount, demonstrate this pictorially and abstract.
- Concrete: 26p can be made by selecting the coins 10p, 10p, 5p and 1p.
- Pictorial: The children can draw the coins to show this.
- Abstract: 26p = 10p + 10p + 5p + 1p
The children will also explore the different ways to make the same amount.
15p can be made with 10p + 5p or 5p + 5p +5p
The following websites includes great money games for the children to enjoy and play.
This week in Topic the children will be learning about the UK. Using google maps they will explore the UK and the countries it is made up of. They will be looking at the famous landmarks in the UK and to identify if they are physical or human features.
Along with this the children will explore the geographical similarities and differences between Bahrain and London. We will be reading the story of Katie in London from the stories of Katie Morag to help us list the different landmarks Katie visits. The children will end the week by using charcoal techniques to draw their favourite landmark in the UK.
Can you find the UK on https://www.google.com/maps ?
Can you use the internet to search interesting facts about a famous landmark in the UK?
As the weather is getting cooler, the children may start to feel cold in class while the AC’s are still needed and when going outside to play, therefore children will need a BSB jumper or cardigan. All uniform need to be labelled with the child’s name and class number.
Spelling test 3 will take place next week.
