In Literacy, the children will begin to learn about writing diaries. This will nicely link with our Topic lessons all about The Great Fire of London. By the end of this unit, the children will be able to write their own diaries documenting the events of The Great Fire of London.
Throughout the week the children will learn about the main features of a diary and use this knowledge as part of their Steps to Success (S2S). This includes the following important elements:
- To write a date
- To start with ‘Dear’
- To use time conjunctions
- To use past tense
- To use personal pronouns
- To use adjectives (description)
- To show emotions (feelings)
In Maths, the children will continue to learn about the British money. Consolidating what they learned last week and the methods used when adding and subtracting, they will begin to find the total of two items.
For example: 30p+49p=79p
When adding pounds and pence the children will learn to count the pounds and pence separately and then combine the two.
For example: ￡1 + 10p +￡5 + 5p = ￡6 and 15p
Children will add the ￡1+￡5=￡6 and then 10p+5p=15p. Together this will be written as ￡6 and 15p
The children will also find the difference between two amounts. They will learn to use two methods- counting on and counting back. The children will learn which method is the most efficient for different calculations.
Counting on- if the two amounts are close in cost then its best to count on
For example: 25p and 29p – count on to get 4p
Counting back- it’s best to count back (subtract) when the two items are further away in price.
For example: 22p and 6p then it’s best to count back. 22p-6p= 18p
Using the above methods the children will also be finding change from 10p, 20p and ￡1. The children will learn that ￡1 is the same as 100p and use their number bond knowledge to 100 to help them to find the change from ￡1.
The following websites are useful for money games:
In Topic, the children will begin to learn about a historical event that took place in London in 1666, this was The Great Fire of London. They will look at London then and now and see how it has changed. The children will make predictions as to how the fire started and then begin to learn the timeline of events which took place and how this was documented and how the fire was finally stopped. The children will read diary entries from Samuel Pepys and use this during their Literacy lessons to write their own diary entry.
Fire Station Trips will take place the week beginning Sunday 25th November.
