Year 2 Bulletin

literacy

In Literacy this week, the child will revisit the learning from previous weeks all about describing a setting. They will focus on The Great Fire of London as the setting and generate vocabulary using their senses to describe it. The children will write their descriptive setting, remembering the Steps to Success (S2S) including, capital letters, full stops, joining conjunctions and adjectives.

Using your senses- hear, feel, see and smell, how would you describe a fire?

The children will also write a recount of the fire station trip. This will help build on the use of time conjunctions, sequencing events in the correct order and expressing how they felt at different stages of their trip.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will be introduced to multiplication. They will begin by making equal groups by using the following statement

There are ____ equal groups with _____in each group.

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

Using this concept the children will then move onto representing the above as a repeated addition calculation

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

This can be said as:

There are three 2s or 3 lots of 2

which can be written as

2+2+2=6

From this the children will then be introduced to the multiplication sign and the different vocabulary used for multiplication, including times, multiply, groups of and lots of. The children will learn to convert the addition calculation into a multiplication calculation.

For example

2+2+2= 6  would be 3×2= 6

This will lead into introducing the children to arrays as a pictorial method for multiplication.

For example

3×2= 6 would be represented as the below array

1.png

topic

In Topic this week the children will be visiting the fire station to learn all about the important job firefighters do, the equipment they use and how to stay safe when there is a fire. This will nicely link into the Great Fire of London where the children will be able to compare and contrast the different methods and equipment used in 1666 and now.

This Week

This week was all about the jungle. We packed our backpacks with a hat, snacks, binoculars, sun cream and a camera and set off to discover lots of different animals. I wonder what essentials your child wanted to take to the jungle and what animals they saw?

On Sunday there was a big, exciting thunderstorm and downpour. Quite a few of the children have been asking questions about it. What is thunder? What is lightning? What is a storm? The teachers have done their best to answer all their questions!

The children also practiced their cutting skills and it would be great if they continue practising this at home.

Next Week

Topic: Wild Animals

Maths: Exploring patterns and recognising where they come from

Letters and Sounds: Loud and quiet, fast and slow, high and low sounds

Our song for next week is ‘Animal Boogie’ you can also listen to this at home.

We will also look at how different animals move and try to recreate the movements.

Carnival of the Animals

On Thursday 22nd of November we will be celebrating the end of our animal topic with a dress up day. Your child can come to school dressed as any animal. We love to see homemade costumes. We invite the parents to come and take pictures and listen to a quick song we have been learning between 7:45 and 8:00.

We would also ask you to bring some animal themed food for the children to share for their snack. Please coordinate with your class link to ensure a balance of food options will be there for the children. The majority of choices should be healthy such as fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, and savouries. A simple cup cake or sweet treat is nice to finish with but we want to make sure there aren’t too many sugar options. By ensuring a healthy range of foods is available, this means your child will not need to bring their usual snack on the day. Instead we will share food buffet style.

Reminders

As the weather is cooling down just a reminder that children should bring to school a school jacket, jumper or cardigan. If they do not have your child’s size in stock then they should wear a plain navy jumper instead. Please remember to label any jumpers or jackets to help us look after your child’s belongings.

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds r as in rat and run and f as in fit and fan.

Geraldine the giraffe can be found before for the r sound

Or the children might enjoy the r alphablocks episode instead.

Geraldine learning the f sound can be found below.

And here is the f alphablocks episode.

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r f.

At home the children can have great fun with a pad of post its and a pencil so that they can label in the objects in their room or the house, eg by writing d on a post-it and sticking it on the door, dor would be very acceptable too!

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with r and f. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

The tricky words this week are he and she. Hunting for he and she in their favourite story book is a super way to help the children recognise these words!

maths

In Maths this week we are learning to find the number which is one more or less than a given number. We will continue to focus on developing a good understanding of the words “more”, “less” and “fewer”.

topic

This week each Reception class will be considering how people move if they are handicapped in some way, and how they move if they need to travel greater distances on land.

literacy

In Literacy this week, we will continue using Handa’s Surprise as a basis for our work, placing events from the story into a story journey. We will then start to practise our acting skills by engaging in some role play, showing key events from the story in a group. We will then end the week by practising re-telling the story in our own words and  then construct sentences.

maths

In Maths this week we are building on our existing knowledge of counting forwards and backwards, by exploring the numbers 11-20. We will look at the ways numbers can be written in numerals and words and practise spelling them correctly. We will then move onto representing numbers with both objects and pictures, and do lots of practical activities with our friends to help us with this. We will end the week by investigating how numbers are made up of tens and ones.

Place Value Shark Game

Fruit Shoot Numbers & Words Game

topic

This week in Topic we are continuing our cultural exploration by focusing on the celebration of Eid. We will use I-pads to investigate how and why Eid is celebrated and complete our very own fact-file with interesting information. We will then practise our folding, cutting and creative skills by making our very own stained glass art.

If any parents would like to come in and share stories or photographs of Eid celebrations, please contact your class teacher to register your interest.

literacy

In Literacy, the children will begin to learn about writing diaries. This will nicely link with our Topic lessons all about The Great Fire of London. By the end of this unit, the children will be able to write their own diaries documenting the events of The Great Fire of London.

Throughout the week the children will learn about the main features of a diary and use this knowledge as part of their Steps to Success (S2S). This includes the following important elements:

  • To write a date
  • To start with ‘Dear’
  • To use time conjunctions
  • To use past tense
  • To use personal pronouns
  • To use adjectives (description)
  • To show emotions (feelings)

maths

In Maths, the children will continue to learn about the British money. Consolidating what they learned last week and the methods used when adding and subtracting, they will begin to find the total of two items.

For example: 30p+49p=79p

When adding pounds and pence the children will learn to count the pounds and pence separately and then combine the two.

For example: £1 + 10p +£5 + 5p = £6 and 15p

Children will add the £1+£5=£6 and then 10p+5p=15p. Together this will be written as £6 and 15p

The children will also find the difference between two amounts. They will learn to use two methods- counting on and counting back. The children will learn which method is the most efficient for different calculations.

Counting on- if the two amounts are close in cost then its best to count on

For example: 25p and 29p – count on to get 4p

Counting back- it’s best to count back (subtract) when the two items are further away in price.

For example: 22p and 6p then it’s best to count back. 22p-6p= 18p

Using the above methods the children will also be finding change from 10p, 20p and £1. The children will learn that £1 is the same as 100p and use their number bond knowledge to 100 to help them to find the change from £1.

The following websites are useful for money games:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=coins%20games

http://www.snappymaths.com/other/measuring/money/interactive/moneyto10pimm/moneyto10pimm.htm

topic

In Topic, the children will begin to learn about a historical event that took place in London in 1666, this was The Great Fire of London. They will look at London then and now and see how it has changed. The children will make predictions as to how the fire started and then begin to learn the timeline of events which took place and how this was documented and how the fire was finally stopped. The children will read diary entries from Samuel Pepys and use this during their Literacy lessons to write their own diary entry.

Nursery

This Week

This week we were singing the nursery rhyme, ‘5 Little Monkeys Swinging Through the Tree’ See if your child can teach you how it goes.

We have also been learning about the features you find on different animals. Have a go at describing an animal for your child to guess. For example, I am thinking of an animal that has a long trunk and stomps, or, has stripes and looks a bit like a horse. What animal am I thinking of?

Next Week

Topic: Wild Animals

Math: Describing a pattern and texture

Letters and Sounds: Following a Rhythm

We will be continuing to follow the children’s lines of inquiry and dive deeper into the topic of animals. We will be investigating habitats, what different animals eat and talk about the texture of different animals.

We will be singing the song ‘Walking in the Jungle’ and thinking of all the things we would need to take if we were going to the jungle. We will also match musical instrument sounds to animals. For example, a drum is an elephant’s stomp, a maraca is a snake slithering on the ground.
