Reception

For the week commencing Sunday, 21st October

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds (g) and (o).

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with g and o (it is the o sound as in octopus or orange not owl o). If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

In class we will be focusing on the words on and off. Encouraging your child to practise taking their cardigan/jumper off and on independently would really help with one planned classroom activity!

We will also be learning the tricky words I and go. Tricky words are words which would not usually be created by blending the individual letter sounds together. Searching for these words in the children’s own story books is an excellent way of practising recognition.

Thank you for the kind donation of old magazines last week, they were much appreciated.

maths

In Maths this week we are learning about repeating patterns involving 2 or more variables (different things) and even some doubles. There is some super additional practice in the shapes pattern game at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns.

topic

This week each Reception class will be experimenting with colour and texture.

reminders

Single Use Plastics

Some children are bringing a single use plastic bottle of water to school every day.  We encourage the children to think about looking after our world (the environment) so can we please ask that you invest in a reusable metal water bottle (if you have been providing single use plastic bottles) and clearly label it with your child’s name and class instead.

Cardigans & Jumpers

Some children are beginning to find the classroom ac units a little cool now that the weather is becoming more pleasant.  It is not possible to make the temperature suit everyone so if your child is complaining of the being cold in the classroom please can you send a school uniform jumper or cardigan with them to school each day. As jumpers and cardigans are removed and put back on over the course of a school day it is particularly important that they are labelled with your child’s name and class.

In Maths this week we are learning the correct mathematical names for 2D shapes and how to use other related vocabulary such as sides and corners. By the end of the week we will be having creative fun investigating which 2D shapes tessellate.

If your child needs to revise the names of the basic 2D shapes they can play shape sorting at https://www.topmarks.co.uk/early-years/shape-monsters.

The teachers would appreciate it if you could e-mail them a photograph of your child with a 2D shape they have found in their own environment. This will be used in slide show to support the class learning about 2D shapes.

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear, say and blend two more letter sounds: t and p. This could be reinforced at home by watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmlzzMTqBxo  (t) and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0akp_j1nbc  (p).

To help recognise the letter shapes which have been introduced so far the children could also play the first level of Phoneme Pop at http://www.ictgames.com/phonemePopLS_v2.html.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with t and p. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

maths

In Maths this week we are focusing on representing the numbers 1 – 5 in many different ways. By using dotted dice and dominoes in many different activities the children will be learning to recall the quantity a particular dot pattern represents without having to count the dots each time the pattern is seen. Likewise the children will be building up their fast recall of quantities represented by various finger patterns.

Playing dominoes at home over the weekend, if you already have a set of dotty dominoes, would be super preparation for the week.

topic

This week each class will be exploring the effect of light on colour. Some classes may be asked to bring a torch into school if they have one.
