Year 1 Bulletin

For the week commencing Sunday, 21st October

literacy

This week in Literacy we will be looking at instructions. We will explore the importance of instructions by playing a variety of games, and explore the use of time connectives e.g. first, next, then and bossy verbs e.g. mix, wash, stir when writing them. We will end the week by watching the story of ‘Meg and Mog – Owl’s Birthday’ and creating our own instructions for making a birthday cake!

Watch the story of Owl’s Birthday here:

Can your child remember in what order the ingredients went into the mixture?

maths

This week in Maths we will be investigating subtraction. We will explore the various ways of completing subtraction problems using cubes and number lines. We will also begin to learn the vocabulary of subtraction, e.g. finding the difference, and begin to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction problems.

topic

This week in Topic we will be learning all about the weather! We will explore a variety of different weather and watch some weather reports to help us with this. We will also investigate the different seasons, and explore the ways the weathers and days change from Summer to Winter.

Watch this for a preview of the Seasons Song!

reminders

Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.

End of day

As you’re already aware, the corridors and walkways are very busy at pick-up time. At the end of the day teachers escort children to a number of different end-of-day locations, and it can be difficult to safely navigate large groups through the corridors at this time. With this in mind, please ensure that when you have collected your child, you exit the building as soon as possible. If your child has Academies, or another engagement on school premises later in the afternoon, please make your way to the cafeteria to wait.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

The Year 1 workshop will be held in Year 1 classrooms on Wednesday 24th October at 1:15.

Year 1 Bulletin

Week commencing Sunday, 7th October

literacy

Next week, Year 1 will be continuing our exploration of monsters to help us start writing sentences. We will be looking at how to use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence, a full stop at the end, as well as the use of finger spaces to make sure our writing is easy to read. We will also be making sure that our words are in the correct order so that our writing makes sense!

To help the children with this, it would be useful if you could practise verbally constructing a sentence at home with them, e.g. “The big cat is black and white.”

maths

Next week in Maths we will be exploring and consolidating our learning of number bonds to 10. We will look at all the different ways to make 10, as well as using the vocabulary of “less than” and “more than”. We will use lots of different objects to help us with this and continue our learning of how to correctly write number sentences with the addition and equals signs.

topic

In Topic we will be exploring ourselves and our bodies by investigating our five senses. We will take part in a variety of activities designed to make us think about our sense of touch, sight, hearing, taste and smell. By the end of the week we will know what parts of our body are used for which sense, and will be able to describe using adjectives how something feels, looks, smells etc.

reminders

Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.

This week the children will bring home a selection of High Frequency Words for them to learn. On a 3 week cycle the children will be tested at random and then be given chance to correct any words they are still finding tricky. The aim is for the children to apply these words regularly within their writing on a day to day basis. Please take the time to revise these words with your child. Thank you!

literacy

In Literacy the children will be asked to draw a picture of their favourite place. This may be something you discuss at home, so that your child has an idea prior to the lesson. The children will then learn about labels and the use of adjectives, so that they can describe their favourite place.

maths

This week in Maths the children will continue to consolidate their knowledge of numbers 1-10 and when ready 10-20. The children will focus on the correct formation when writing the numbers and being able to continue a sequence adding and subtracting 1 every time. Once mastered the children will begin to continue a sequence counting forwards and backwards in 2’s.

topic

This week we will begin our Topic of Me, Myself and I. We will discuss ourselves, our families and our favourite things to do, as well as talking about self-confidence and how to be proud of our diversity and achievements.

On Sunday we would like it if all children could come to school with a special item from home that they can discuss with their class. We also invite children to attend school wearing an outfit that they may wear to a celebratory occasion, or special dinner with family.

reminders

  • Please remember to bring a water bottle and hat to school everyday.
  • Next week is a 3-day week (Sunday-Tuesday) due to the Ashoora holiday.
