literacy

In Literacy this week, the children will continue with the theme of the Great Fire of London and use this to start learning about poems. The children will explore the features in poems, including:

Similes e.g- bright as the sun

Alliteration e.g- smoke swirling

The children will use their understanding of adjectives and verbs to construct a poem all about fire. The children will also present their poem as a shape poem. Changing their voices and using expression the children will practise performing their poem to the class.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will continue to learn about multiplication and apply their understanding of arrays to help solve multiplication calculations. Whilst exploring arrays the children will begin to understand that multiplication is commutative.

For example

5 x 2 is the same as 2 x 5

2 x 8 is the same as 8 x 2

The children will explore the above calculations using arrays so that they can see that whichever calculation they do, they would still end up with the same answer.

The children will also be introduced and shown how to  solve multiplication word problems.

For example

There are 5 bags of apple and each bag contains 2 apples. How many apples are there?

The children can solve this as

5×2 or 2×5

The children will need to follow the process of reading the question careful, underlining the key words and numbers and then drawing their method pictorially and writing the calculation. As shown in the above example, the children will be encouraged to write both multiplication calculations to show the commutativity in multiplication.

topic

The children will excited to spend the week practising for their class Great Fire of London performance which will take place the week beginning Sunday 9th December.

The children will be learning their script, songs and practise acting as the role they’re given and to read their lines using expression and gestures.

Have a go at reading your lines to someone at home.

Can you remember your lines and read them by heart?

reminders

literacy

In Literacy this week, the child will revisit the learning from previous weeks all about describing a setting. They will focus on The Great Fire of London as the setting and generate vocabulary using their senses to describe it. The children will write their descriptive setting, remembering the Steps to Success (S2S) including, capital letters, full stops, joining conjunctions and adjectives.

Using your senses- hear, feel, see and smell, how would you describe a fire?

The children will also write a recount of the fire station trip. This will help build on the use of time conjunctions, sequencing events in the correct order and expressing how they felt at different stages of their trip.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will be introduced to multiplication. They will begin by making equal groups by using the following statement

There are ____ equal groups with _____in each group.

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

Using this concept the children will then move onto representing the above as a repeated addition calculation

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

This can be said as:

There are three 2s or 3 lots of 2

which can be written as

2+2+2=6

From this the children will then be introduced to the multiplication sign and the different vocabulary used for multiplication, including times, multiply, groups of and lots of. The children will learn to convert the addition calculation into a multiplication calculation.

For example

2+2+2= 6  would be 3×2= 6

This will lead into introducing the children to arrays as a pictorial method for multiplication.

For example

3×2= 6 would be represented as the below array

1.png

topic

In Topic this week the children will be visiting the fire station to learn all about the important job firefighters do, the equipment they use and how to stay safe when there is a fire. This will nicely link into the Great Fire of London where the children will be able to compare and contrast the different methods and equipment used in 1666 and now.

literacy

In Literacy, the children will begin to learn about writing diaries. This will nicely link with our Topic lessons all about The Great Fire of London. By the end of this unit, the children will be able to write their own diaries documenting the events of The Great Fire of London.

Throughout the week the children will learn about the main features of a diary and use this knowledge as part of their Steps to Success (S2S). This includes the following important elements:

  • To write a date
  • To start with ‘Dear’
  • To use time conjunctions
  • To use past tense
  • To use personal pronouns
  • To use adjectives (description)
  • To show emotions (feelings)

maths

In Maths, the children will continue to learn about the British money. Consolidating what they learned last week and the methods used when adding and subtracting, they will begin to find the total of two items.

For example: 30p+49p=79p

When adding pounds and pence the children will learn to count the pounds and pence separately and then combine the two.

For example: £1 + 10p +£5 + 5p = £6 and 15p

Children will add the £1+£5=£6 and then 10p+5p=15p. Together this will be written as £6 and 15p

The children will also find the difference between two amounts. They will learn to use two methods- counting on and counting back. The children will learn which method is the most efficient for different calculations.

Counting on- if the two amounts are close in cost then its best to count on

For example: 25p and 29p – count on to get 4p

Counting back- it’s best to count back (subtract) when the two items are further away in price.

For example: 22p and 6p then it’s best to count back. 22p-6p= 18p

Using the above methods the children will also be finding change from 10p, 20p and £1. The children will learn that £1 is the same as 100p and use their number bond knowledge to 100 to help them to find the change from £1.

topic

In Topic, the children will begin to learn about a historical event that took place in London in 1666, this was The Great Fire of London. They will look at London then and now and see how it has changed. The children will make predictions as to how the fire started and then begin to learn the timeline of events which took place and how this was documented and how the fire was finally stopped. The children will read diary entries from Samuel Pepys and use this during their Literacy lessons to write their own diary entry.

Year 2 Curriculum Workshop

literacy

This week in Literacy the children will continue to read the stories of Katie Morag. They will begin to use adjectives to describe a setting by looking at the Island of Struay. The children will be encouraged to use their senses when describing a setting- see, hear, smell and feel.

To support this, the children will be introduced to Expanded Noun Phrases (ENP’s) which incorporates using 2 adjectives to describe a noun e.g. deep, cold river. The children will begin to use a comma when writing a list of adjectives and will explore different sentences openers.

Once the children have written their setting description, they will attempt to uplevel their work against the Steps to Success (S2S).

maths

This week in Maths, the children will begin to learn about the British money. They will begin to count money in pence- 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p and then count money in pounds £1, £2, £5 £10 and £20. The children will then count both pence and pounds using the word ‘and’ to combine the money together.

For example £2 + £1 + 20p + 10p = £3 and 30p

Concretely the children will make an amount, demonstrate this pictorially and abstract.

For example

  • Concrete: 26p can be made by selecting the coins 10p, 10p, 5p and 1p.
  • Pictorial: The children can draw the coins to show this.
  • Abstract: 26p = 10p + 10p + 5p + 1p

The children will also explore the different ways to make the same amount.

For example

15p can be made with 10p + 5p or 5p + 5p +5p

The following websites includes great money games for the children to enjoy and play.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Search.aspx?q=coins%20games

topic

This week in Topic the children will be learning about the UK. Using google maps they will explore the UK and the countries it is made up of. They will be looking at the famous landmarks in the UK and to identify if they are physical or human features.

Along with this the  children will explore the geographical similarities and differences between Bahrain and London. We will be reading the story of Katie in London from the stories of Katie Morag to help us list the different landmarks Katie visits. The children will end the week by using charcoal techniques to draw their favourite landmark in the UK.

Can you find the UK on https://www.google.com/maps ?

Can you use the internet to search interesting facts about a famous landmark in the UK?

reminders

As the weather is getting cooler, the children may start to feel cold in class while the AC’s are still needed and when going outside to play, therefore children will need a BSB jumper or cardigan. All uniform need to be labelled with the child’s name and class number.

Spelling test 3 will take place next week.

literacy

Katie.pngIn Literacy this week, the children will begin to learn about stories from different parts of the world. This will be stories about Katie Morag who is a feisty, red-headed girl who lives with her family on the Scottish Island of Struay. We will be focusing on the setting of the story and linking this into our Topic lessons.

While we read all the adventures of Katie Morag, we will be asking the children different questions to help build their understanding of the story. These questions all come under PRIVS dogs

Reading.PNG

The children will begin to familiarise themselves with these types of questions and use the PRIVS dogs to help them do this.

The children will continue to use adjectives and joining conjunctions to describe a setting. They will be introduced to but, when and or as new conjunctions to use in their writing.

maths

In Maths, the children will continue to subtract numbers using the method of exchanging TENS into ONES. and demonstrating this using a blank number line. They will begin to practise this method by subtracting two 2-digit numbers, crossing the tens.

The below examples show how this is done concretely.

34 – 16 =

maths 1

34 has 3 tens and 4 ones. To be able to subtract 16 (partitioned as 1 ten and 6 ones), we need 6 ones. So exchange one ten for 10 ones. Now we can subtract 1 ten and 6 ones to give us the answer using concrete objects.

The below example shows a pictorial method for subtraction, using a blank number line.

51 – 12 =

maths 2
In this example we partition the 12 into 1 ten and 2 ones so we would subtract the 10 and then the ones. For this method, the children need to be confident in subtracting 10 from any given number.

topic

In Topic this week, the children will be making links to the stories of Katie Morag from their Literacy lessons, to begin their fist science unit all about materials. We will be sorting and classifying everyday materials according to their properties.

As the children begin to learn more about Katie Morag and the rainy island she lives, they will conduct an experiment to find out which materials are suitable for a raincoat. The children will predict, conduct and conclude. We will be thinking about the following questions

  1. What material could we use to make a raincoat?
  2. How will we test the materials?
  3. What predictions will we make about the materials?
  4. Which materials are waterproof/not?
  5. Why would certain materials not make a good raincoat?

This will lead into learning about the Scottish inventor Charles Macintosh who was a Scottish chemist and the inventor of waterproof fabric.

We would like the children to explore different waterproof materials. If you have any of the following items at home, umbrellas, wellies, raincoats, shower caps, we would appreciate it if you can bring them into school for this week.

reminders

As the weather is getting cooler, the children may start to feel cold in class while the AC’s are still needed and when going outside to play, therefore children will need a BSB jumper or cardigan. All uniform need to be labelled with the child’s name and class number.

The school will be closed on Friday 26th October – Saturday 3rd of November, inclusive.
