Year 2 Bulletin

literacy

In Literacy this week, the children will continue with the theme of the Great Fire of London and use this to start learning about poems. The children will explore the features in poems, including:

Similes e.g- bright as the sun

Alliteration e.g- smoke swirling

The children will use their understanding of adjectives and verbs to construct a poem all about fire. The children will also present their poem as a shape poem. Changing their voices and using expression the children will practise performing their poem to the class.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will continue to learn about multiplication and apply their understanding of arrays to help solve multiplication calculations. Whilst exploring arrays the children will begin to understand that multiplication is commutative.

For example

5 x 2 is the same as 2 x 5

2 x 8 is the same as 8 x 2

The children will explore the above calculations using arrays so that they can see that whichever calculation they do, they would still end up with the same answer.

The children will also be introduced and shown how to  solve multiplication word problems.

For example

There are 5 bags of apple and each bag contains 2 apples. How many apples are there?

The children can solve this as

5×2 or 2×5

The children will need to follow the process of reading the question careful, underlining the key words and numbers and then drawing their method pictorially and writing the calculation. As shown in the above example, the children will be encouraged to write both multiplication calculations to show the commutativity in multiplication.

topic

The children will excited to spend the week practising for their class Great Fire of London performance which will take place the week beginning Sunday 9th December.

The children will be learning their script, songs and practise acting as the role they’re given and to read their lines using expression and gestures.

Have a go at reading your lines to someone at home.

Can you remember your lines and read them by heart?

reminders

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds b as in bat and bun and h as in hit and hen.  Geraldine the giraffe can be found below.

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r f.

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with b and h. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

The tricky words this week are we and me. There are some super tricky word songs which really help the children to recognise and remember specific tricky words. One example is below.

maths

In Maths this week we are learning to use number sentences for addition and subtraction.  This means being able to describe a picture of 2 sets in the following way, “2 and 1 more makes 3” or “5 take away 3 leaves 2”.

topic

This week each Reception class will be considering transport by boat. There will be lots of opportunities to make boats from different materials and test their strength in water.

literacy

This week we will continue using the story of Handa’s Surprise as a basis for our learning. We will discuss what is needed to write a sentence and practise writing our own, with a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. We will then use our imagination to change the story to create our own characters and events, and practise verbally re-telling and writing our own new and improved version!

maths

This week we will be continuing our exploration of numbers 10-20, focusing on tens and ones. We will use practical apparatus to help us with this, and then move on to comparing numbers using a variety of strategies. We will practise using the language of more than, less than and equal to, and finish the week by ordering groups of objects in a variety of ways.

You can help your child at home by using more than, less than and equal to in your everyday conversations, e.g. “Who has got more pencils? Who has got the least food on their plate?”

Why not use this website to practise your mental maths skills;

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

topic

This week we will continue our cultural exploration around the world by learning all about Chinese New Year! We will first learn about how and why people celebrate, and discuss the different animals that are part of the Chinese calendar.

We will then use this knowledge as a basis for investigating the different types of animals – mammals, fish, amphibians, birds and reptiles. At the end of the week, we will become animal detectives, and use I-pads to research the physical features, habits and food source of different animals.

Year 2 Bulletin

literacy

In Literacy this week, the child will revisit the learning from previous weeks all about describing a setting. They will focus on The Great Fire of London as the setting and generate vocabulary using their senses to describe it. The children will write their descriptive setting, remembering the Steps to Success (S2S) including, capital letters, full stops, joining conjunctions and adjectives.

Using your senses- hear, feel, see and smell, how would you describe a fire?

The children will also write a recount of the fire station trip. This will help build on the use of time conjunctions, sequencing events in the correct order and expressing how they felt at different stages of their trip.

maths

In Maths this week, the children will be introduced to multiplication. They will begin by making equal groups by using the following statement

There are ____ equal groups with _____in each group.

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

Using this concept the children will then move onto representing the above as a repeated addition calculation

For example

There are 3 equal groups with 2 in each group.

🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺 🔺          🔺

This can be said as:

There are three 2s or 3 lots of 2

which can be written as

2+2+2=6

From this the children will then be introduced to the multiplication sign and the different vocabulary used for multiplication, including times, multiply, groups of and lots of. The children will learn to convert the addition calculation into a multiplication calculation.

For example

2+2+2= 6  would be 3×2= 6

This will lead into introducing the children to arrays as a pictorial method for multiplication.

For example

3×2= 6 would be represented as the below array

1.png

topic

In Topic this week the children will be visiting the fire station to learn all about the important job firefighters do, the equipment they use and how to stay safe when there is a fire. This will nicely link into the Great Fire of London where the children will be able to compare and contrast the different methods and equipment used in 1666 and now.

Nursery

This Week

This week was all about the jungle. We packed our backpacks with a hat, snacks, binoculars, sun cream and a camera and set off to discover lots of different animals. I wonder what essentials your child wanted to take to the jungle and what animals they saw?

On Sunday there was a big, exciting thunderstorm and downpour. Quite a few of the children have been asking questions about it. What is thunder? What is lightning? What is a storm? The teachers have done their best to answer all their questions!

The children also practiced their cutting skills and it would be great if they continue practising this at home.

Next Week

Topic: Wild Animals

Maths: Exploring patterns and recognising where they come from

Letters and Sounds: Loud and quiet, fast and slow, high and low sounds

Our song for next week is ‘Animal Boogie’ you can also listen to this at home.

We will also look at how different animals move and try to recreate the movements.

Carnival of the Animals

On Thursday 22nd of November we will be celebrating the end of our animal topic with a dress up day. Your child can come to school dressed as any animal. We love to see homemade costumes. We invite the parents to come and take pictures and listen to a quick song we have been learning between 7:45 and 8:00.

We would also ask you to bring some animal themed food for the children to share for their snack. Please coordinate with your class link to ensure a balance of food options will be there for the children. The majority of choices should be healthy such as fruits, vegetables, sandwiches, and savouries. A simple cup cake or sweet treat is nice to finish with but we want to make sure there aren’t too many sugar options. By ensuring a healthy range of foods is available, this means your child will not need to bring their usual snack on the day. Instead we will share food buffet style.

Reminders

As the weather is cooling down just a reminder that children should bring to school a school jacket, jumper or cardigan. If they do not have your child’s size in stock then they should wear a plain navy jumper instead. Please remember to label any jumpers or jackets to help us look after your child’s belongings.

literacy

In Literacy this week we are excited to be learning to read, write, hear and say two more letter sounds r as in rat and run and f as in fit and fan.

Geraldine the giraffe can be found before for the r sound

Or the children might enjoy the r alphablocks episode instead.

Geraldine learning the f sound can be found below.

And here is the f alphablocks episode.

We will also be practising blending the sounds we have learned to date: s a t p i n m d g o c k ck e u r f.

At home the children can have great fun with a pad of post its and a pencil so that they can label in the objects in their room or the house, eg by writing d on a post-it and sticking it on the door, dor would be very acceptable too!

Each class will be creating a display of objects which begin with r and f. If your child can find a small object to contribute please make sure it is labelled with their name and class before they bring it to school. That way each object will be returned to its rightful owner at the end of the week.

The tricky words this week are he and she. Hunting for he and she in their favourite story book is a super way to help the children recognise these words!

maths

In Maths this week we are learning to find the number which is one more or less than a given number. We will continue to focus on developing a good understanding of the words “more”, “less” and “fewer”.

topic

This week each Reception class will be considering how people move if they are handicapped in some way, and how they move if they need to travel greater distances on land.
